The LONG ESSAY QUESTION (LEQ) is one of the two FULL essays you will need to write on your APUSH Exam. On Exam Day, you will be presented with THREE prompts, and you will write ONE of the essays. You will have 40 minutes to write this essay and it accounts for 15% of your overall score.
The LEQ will either be a COMPARISON, CAUSATION or CONTINUITY AND CHANGE OVER TIME (CCOT). Each of the three option will assess the SAME historical thinking skill.
The three prompts will be numbered 2, 3, and 4. (The DBQ is #1). The prompts are divided as follows:
#2: Periods 1 - 3 (1491-1800)
#3: Periods 4 - 6 (1800-1898)
#4: Periods 7 -9 (1898 - Present)
LEQ Score Conversions:
When we write LEQs in class, this is the conversion chart to change your score from the 6 Point Rubric to a grade for Infinite Campus.
6 --> 100
5--> 95
4 --> 90
3 --> 80
2 --> 70
1 -->60
0--> 50 (assuming something was turned in)
Remember, to be in the running for a 3 on your AP Exam, you need to earn AT LEAST 3 points on your LEQ.
Remember, a SIMPLE thesis (y because A and B. OR Y because A, B, and C) will earn you the thesis point.
But if you want to set yourself up to earn the complexity point, you have to write a complex thesis statement.
Here is the 1 Pager Guide to writing the LEQ. Focus on these strategies to help you write your essay.
***CAUTION***
College Board made some changes to the COMPLEXITY POINT on the LEQ Rubric in September 2023. If the video is OLDER THAN THAT, it may not correctly address the COMPLEXITY POINT.
