Textbook Resources: AMSCO Topics 6.4 - 6.6; American Pageant Chapter 22 and 24 (Link on Google Classroom) , A People's History Chapters 10-11 .
** The AMSCO Book and the American Pageant don't line up particularly well for this set of readings. Most of the information is in Chapters 22 and 24 of the American Pageant, but not all of it.
The key terms, names, and vocabulary for Topics 6.4 - 6.6. It also covers all the terms from the American Pageant Chapters 22 and 24.
Here are the American Pageant Notes for Chapters 22 & 24. Remember, the Am Pag doesn't line up well with the AMSCO Topics in this Unit, so some things may be in one of of the other chapters (posted in Part 1 or Part 3)
Philosophies of the Gilded Age:
Wealth of Nations by Adam Smith
I wasn't able to find the text (free) for "Survival of the Fittest Applied to Human Kind" by Herbert Spencer. Here is a MODERN essay linking Spencer's ideas to laissez-faire capitalism and here is the text of a speech by one of Spencer's contemporaries defending and explaining his ideas. Herbert Spencer and the Doctrine of Evolution
"Wealth" by Andrew Carnegie (Despite some of it's problematic ideas, this is still considered the foundation of modern philanthropy.)
W.E.B. DuBois --> The Talented Tenth (a nice annotated copy of the essay) and The Soul of Black Folks
An article from the UMASS Daily Collegian explaining why the campus library is named for W.E.B. DuBois "W.E.B. DuBois Library: 28 Stories and 50 Years"
