Course Description: Art I is a comprehensive course with introductory experiences which is a prerequisite for all other art courses in high school. It offers opportunities for students to express themselves imaginatively and creatively through work in a variety of media, techniques, vocabulary and experiences. Emphasis is placed on the elements and principles of design. The course is designed for the students’ understanding and appreciation of historical and contemporary artists’,their artwork and their contribution to societies. Students will be required to maintain a sketchbook and a portfolio which will be used to develop ideas and skills necessary for completing course assignments. These compilations may be used as students participate in contests and compete for scholarships and college admissions.

What do students need to do to be actively involved in Visual Arts at Dobie?
Art I is available to any student. All upper level 2, 3 or 4 Art courses (painting, sculpture or drawing) require an 80% average in Art 1 or the previous level course. Upper level art students will be strongly encouraged to compete in various competitions, such as Rodeo, Scholastic and VASE.
Is experience required to join Art courses?
Students should have a strong desire to improve their artistic skills and be willing to put in the effort for such improvements in Art 1. All level art courses beyond Art 1 are considered upper level and require a solid artistic skillset that allow the student to produce quality art work.
What is expected of students involved in Visual Arts at Dobie (practices, time commitment, cost, etc.)?
Students will be expected to put forth effort, try new techniques, apply critical thinking skills, and produce quality work. Expectations progressively get more intense as art students move up in courses. There is a $30 class fee for all upper level art courses 2, 3 & 4 (painting sculpture and drawing). AP studeo art has a $35 course fee. Competition participation will be expected from upper level art courses.
What should I expect to experience as a student involved in Visual Arts at Dobie?
Art students should expect an intense focus on improving artistic and creating/critical thinking skills and experience with a variety of mediums and styles.
