Prerequisite: Completion of preceding year of band and audition
The band program and percussion provides the vehicles necessary to meet the needs of students interested in instrumental wind and percussion performance. The Marching Band performs at all football games and the pep rallies associated with them. In addition, the band marches in local parades. Music performed ranges from marches to contemporary pieces. Concert Bands meet the needs and different abilities of all band students. Fundamentals for the development of proper technique, tone production, music interpretation, etc. are stressed. Music of all types is performed during concerts given within the school year.
Dobie Band FAQ's
What do students need to do to be actively involved in Band at Dobie?
Band is open to all current 8th grade band students. Colorguard is open to any students that are interested. Both groups require an audition process.
Is experience required to join Dobie Band?
Experience is required for band, but not for colorguard.
What is expected of students involved in Dobie Band (practices, time commitment, cost, etc.)?
Band and colorguard have mandatory rehearsal camps and/or summer band prior to the start of school – calendars will be released prior to the end of the current school year. In the fall, both groups rehearse 8 hours per week outside of school hours, plus perform at all football games and 4-5 marching contests (Saturdays from late Sept. through October). Bands will have regular extra rehearsals/sectionals during concert season but not nearly as time-intensive as marching season. Colorguard students may or may not choose to participate in Winterguard in the spring semester. Band and colorguard fees may range from $300-$400 per year. Required merchandise for new students (marching shoes, dri-fit shirts, duffel bag, etc.) is an additional cost, approximately $115 – colorguard may have additional items to purchase (warm-ups, etc.). Winterguard is optional and carries a separate fee – approximately $400.
What should I expect to experience as a student involved in Dobie Band?
Band/Colorguard is time-intensive but extremely rewarding with regard to the friendships formed, performance experience, and being a part of a large, organized group activity. It is both an athletic and artistic activity which will help push the students boundaries with regard to work ethic, artistic expression, and attention to detail. Membership in band/colorguard carries PE credit in the fall and Fine Arts credit in the spring (two years membership will complete the PE and Fine Arts credits required for graduation).
