Prerequisite: Audition
Description of course: Members of school vocal music groups further their understanding of types of musical performance through opportunities to perform all kinds of music within the capabilities of the group. This is achieved through presentation of school and community programs, including public concerts, musicals, performance tours, children’s concerts, recitals and contests. Participation through large and small ensemble performances and solo recitals offers students opportunities to study the ways in which musical ideas are developed in different types of vocal composition, relating the music they sing to the society and historical period which gave it birth and discovering the expressive aspects of the music they sing and developing the techniques for performance.

Dobie Choir FAQ's
What do students need to do to be actively involved in Choir at Dobie?
Students need to have a desire to sing and participate daily. Daily participation is key. We sing every day. We have four concerts a year - a fall concert, holiday concert, UIL competition with a pre-UIL concert for family members who can't attend UIL and our end-of-the-year popshow. We also host a talent show during the course of the year for interested singers and performers. In the fall/winter we have region choir auditions. And in February we compete in solo/ensemble contest. Being accepted into the region choir is a choir student's fastest way to obtain their letterman jacket. We have students who have obtained their letterman jacket their freshmen year due to being accepted to the region choir. Other ways to obtain their letterman jacket are to be in the Varsity Choir for two years or the choir program for four years.
Is experience required to join Dobie Choir?
Right now, experience is not required. We will take anyone who has the desire to sing. We teach all of our classes to read sheet music throughout the year. It is easier for students who know how to match pitch but with dedication even non-pitch matchers can be successful.
What is expected of students involved in Dobie Choir (practices, time commitment, cost, etc.)?
Currently, the varsity choir is required to do outside rehearsals throughout the school year. Varsity is also required to do region auditions. All choir students must commit to doing after school rehearsals during UIL season. We strive to work with other directors and coaches so that a student can do multiple activities. After school rehearsals are usually scheduled once we know the conflicts of the students involved. Right now, the choir fee for the year is $60. This fee is mostly for materials like sheet music, folders, dry cleaning fees, choir t-shrits, etc. This fee does not include the purchase of tux shirts, region fees, Solo/Ensemble fees, choir banquet fees or the cost of voice lessons if the student chooses to take voice lessons.
What should I expect to experience as a student involved in Dobie Choir?
Students should expect to sing every day. Sophomores, Junior and Seniors have the opportunity to be in the Varsity choir based on audition. The same is true for the JFD Singers Show Choir. We go on an out-of-state trip every 2 years for Juniors and Seniors and Varsity Choir Members. We have visited Walt Disney World, New York City and New Orleans in recent years. Our next trip will tentatively be in the spring of 2022.
Additional Information:
The Varsity Choir or the JFD Singers perform the national anthem at football games and special events. The JFD singers do a holiday tour and are the highlight of our Holiday and Pop Show. Students have the opportunity to take private voice lessons every week from a private voice teacher that comes to the school. Voice lessons can usually be completed during the choir class period, at lunch or after school. Social activities during normal school years include Back to School Bash in the fall, Movie Nights, Annual Choir Banquet, trips to concerts, operas and musicals, in-state or out-of-state choir trips.
