Prerequisite: Completion of preceding year of orchestra and audition
The orchestra program is designed to further increase technical skills, musical enjoyment, and understanding of students through performance of music ranging from early Baroque to present day. Performance opportunities exist for large ensembles, small chamber music groups, and solos. Activities include public concerts, performance tours, children’s concerts, musicals, and contests. Orchestras performing music of different levels of difficulty are available. Occasionally the top band and orchestra members combine to form the symphony orchestra. This group performs standard and modern orchestral literature.

What do students need to do to be actively involved in Orchestra at Dobie?
Come to school with their instrument every day and be ready to make music with your friends! We also have fun socials, trips and other cool events to attend.
Is experience required to join Dobie Orchestra?
Yes, experience is required
What is expected of students involved in Dobie Orchestra (practices, time commitment, cost, etc.)?
For freshmen in particular: Students are expected to practice at home. Rehearsals are only once before concerts and UIL, solo/ensemble (optional). There is a nominal fee, but the orchestra provides everything that you will need. There will also be some first-time expenses for things that will last for the rest of high school, such as your orchestra polo. Fees reduce after freshman year.

Additional Information:
The Dobie Orchestra is comprised of over 240+ members and a team of student officers. We participate in several activities throughout the school year such as: Holiday Tours to hospitals, Houston Symphony Lobby performances, and other community events. We also take an in-state trip every year and an out of state trip every 4 years ( last time we went to Disney). Our next out of state trip will be in 2022! We have had numerous world-class musicians come to clinic and perform for our students. We are a 5 time Houston Symphony Residency school. Our Student officers organize our social events like scary movie night, game night, and our biggest party of the year our orchestra banquet. Yes Dobie Orchestra is where its at. Come thru its gon be LIT!
