The study of Design and Technology Stage 6 develops conceptual understanding and enables students to creatively apply these to specific technological endeavours through design projects. It also seeks to develop students’ appreciation of the historical and cultural influences on design and the interrelationships of design, technology, society and the environment.
Design and Technology has a unique focus on creativity, innovation and the successful implementation of innovative ideas. Students will investigate the importance of evaluation, the role of computer-based technologies, management, communication and collaborative design, as well as exploring current and emerging technologies. Through the completion of quality design projects, students are provided with the opportunity to develop specific production and manufacturing skills.
Design and Technology is inclusive of the needs, interests and aspirations of all students. It provides opportunities for students to develop design projects in areas of individual interest, to discuss equity issues related to design, production and manufacturing in the Australian society and to consider careers in the fields of design and manufacturing.
Students will be given the opportunity to explore and develop technologies and demonstrate insight into the future uses of technology. They will articulate arguments on issues and consequences including environmental and social impacts. They will develop skills that are transferable and which lead to lifelong learning.

impact of the major design project on the
individual, society and the environment.
As part of this study, students will complete a major design project.
This course involves the study of design theory and practice, design processes, environmental and social issues, communication, research, technologies, and the manipulation of materials, tools and techniques. It involves hands-on practical activities which develop knowledge and skills in designing and producing. The course involves the development, realisation and documentation of design projects. The Major Design Project and supporting folio requires students to select and apply appropriate design, production and evaluation skills to a product, system or environment that satisfies an identified need or opportunity.
Materials
Students are required to have their own laptop capable of storing and editing large files.
The Adobe Creative Suite will be available for students to download and use for the entirety of the course.
Students will also need to buy a A3 display book to present their portfolios.
iPads and chromebooks are not suitable for use in this course.
What kind of practical work do we do in Year 11?
Year 11 is mainly used to prepare you for your HSC and Major Project so we will try and build your skills so that you are able to use these in Year 12. You will have the opportunity to explore a design field you are interested in and create a prototype of your design.
What post school opportunities will Design and Technology help me with?
This course prepares you to study in design courses at university and tertiary education. Career options include: Architecture, Graphic designer, Fashion designer, Product designer, Engineering model maker, Multimedia artist, Interior designer and many more.
Do you do any theory work in Design and Technology?
Yes absolutely! You need to remember that there is also a 1.5hr exam that you need to sit for your HSC so you need to know your content in order to succeed in this subject as well as your Major Project.
What needs to accompany my Major Project and who marks it?
As well as your project, you need to submit a 40 A3 page folio . Your project and folio are marked externally by a team of markers who come into the school.
What can I create for my Major Project in Year 12?
You can follow any design path that you're interested in. This can include a focus on Architectural design, Graphic design, Textile design, Industrial design and the list goes on.
What can this subject offer me career-wise?
You can find out more here.
I have more questions, who can I ask?
Contact Miss Beauman for further clarification about the subject area.
