Students study design processes, design theory and factors affecting design in relation to projects being developed at school.
In the Preliminary Course students design and produce two design projects.
In the HSC course students undertake a study of Innovation and Emerging Technologies which includes a case study on innovation and emerging technology. They also study design and manufacturing processes which includes the completion of a Major Design Project. The Major works offers students the opportunity to consider projects associated with potential career paths in Architecture, Graphic Design, Interior Design, Fashion, Web design Marketing etc. Students will have the option of using a wide range of materials and equipment ranging from conventional tools to 3D printing and laser etching or cutting.

Designing and Producing including the study of the factors affecting design, design processes, creativity, manufacturing techniques and the production of prototypes.
HSC Course
Innovation and Emerging Technologies including a case study of innovation. The study of designing and producing includes a Major Design Project based on a Product, System or Environment The project folio includes a project proposal and management, project development and realisation, and project evaluation.

In the Preliminary Course, students must participate in hands-on practical activities. In the HSC course, the comprehensive study of designing and producing as studied in the Preliminary Course are synthesised and applied. This culminates in the development and realisation of a major design project and the presentation of a case study. The purchase of materials for the HSC major design project is the student’s responsibility.
