KLA: MATHEMATICS
KLA: MATHEMATICS
The Mathematics courses at Stage 6 are designed to:
develop a solid foundation of literacy and numeracy
encourage students to complete Mathematics at their highest possible level
foster the intellectual, creative, ethical and social development of students
provide a flexible structure within which students can meet the challenges of and prepare for:
further academic study, vocational training and employment
changing workplaces, including an increasingly STEM-focused (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) workforce
full and active participation as global citizens
provide formal assessment and certification of students’ achievements
promote the development of students’ values, identity and self-respect.
The Mathematics Stage 6 syllabuses are designed to offer opportunities for students to think mathematically. Mathematical thinking is supported by an atmosphere of questioning, communicating, reasoning and reflecting and is engendered by opportunities to generalise, challenge, identify or find connections and think critically and creatively.
All Mathematics Stage 6 syllabuses provide opportunities for students to develop 21st-century knowledge, skills, understanding, values and attitudes. As part of this, in all courses students are encouraged to learn with the use of appropriate technology and make appropriate choices when selecting technologies as a support for mathematical activity.
The Extension, Advanced and Standard Mathematics courses are all Board Developed courses that can be used to attain an ATAR. The courses are all 2 units of study and belong to the following categories :
Students who choose to study the Standard 1 course for the HSC have the option of not sitting the final exam. Only those students who choose to sit the examination at the end of the Standard 1 course will be able to use it in the calculation of an ATAR. In addition, those students who undertake the study of Standard 1 and wish to receive an ATAR must ensure that they satisfy the ATAR requirements, as no more than 2 units from Category B courses can be included in the ATAR calculation.
The University of Sydney has decided to only allow students who have achieved at least a Band 4 in HSC Advanced Mathematics to be potentially eligible for a number of their programs. These undergraduate programs have material with a quantitative element. The changes are set to apply to admissions from 2019. In due course, it may be that other NSW Universities adopt a similar stance. Please take the time to check the requirements of any University courses that you are interested in, to see if they specify a specific level of Mathematics that should be studied at Stage 6.
All students in Stage 6 are required to show that they have met a minimum standard in literacy and numeracy. Successful study of the Extension, Advanced or Standard courses is sufficient for students to complete the minimum standard Numeracy assessment.
The Mathematics courses are related to each other to facilitate movement between the courses, however this is not a seamless process in all instances. It is not advisable to move Mathematics courses, as it has been shown that students who choose correctly from the beginning, based on their skills and level, are more likely to achieve at the highest bands.
