Science Extension

KLA: SCIENCE
The Science Extension course is steeped in the traditions of research across all disciplines of Science. It is a unique course, studied only after completing at least one of the Preliminary Courses, Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Environmental Science, Physics and Investigating Science.
The Science Extension course is framed around Inquiry Questions that both direct learners to important aspects around the Research process of Science. Learners are provided the opportunity to experience, first hand, post school opportunities usually only witnessed at university. Learners will choose a research topic to investigate and be encouraged to seek the help of a mentor who can act as an expert in the specific field of Science being studied. A Research Report will be constructed and presented as part of the assessment for this course. Complementing this work in the research field, learners will gain experience across a variety of data analysis techniques used at universities across the world to analyse data collected during research.
Science Extension is the first and only HSC subject to be taken as an online examination. Science Extension gives learners authentic research experiences which will prove invaluable for those seeking a university place and subsequently a career in Science.
At Marian, the Science learning environment uses questioning as our prime starting point for learning. Upon asking questions, making observations that link content with investigation we seek to develop deep understanding across each module.
Throughout the course, learners will have opportunities to experience Learning across the Curriculum which engages and inspires today’s learners to be ready for the challenges of tomorrow by seeking contexts within which we study research science. A focus on questioning allows for a diverse range of learners, seeking to inspire and develop young scientific minds that can shape the future.
We encourage all learners to develop their ability to work with their peers and teachers to Work Scientifically to gain insight into the research world.
Opportunities exist throughout each module for students to engage in Depth Studies. These allow for individual interests and abilities in seeking further understanding of the course concepts. They include individual or collaborative investigative techniques, opportunities to use technology for further investigation of specific concepts as well as development of self assessment skills.
