In October, Year 5 pupils at OVPA had the privilege of attending the first of two workshops led by representatives from Hastings Piano International. This visit was designed to deepen their understanding of music, particularly in classical genres, and introduce them to the prestigious Hastings International Piano Competition, a globally recognized event held biennially. Earlier this year, in February, a group of Year 5 and 6 pupils attended the competition, further igniting their interest in classical music.
During the workshop, students participated in a hands-on activity where they composed an original song titled "Being Me in My World." The song was inspired by themes from their PSHE curriculum, focusing on teamwork and self-expression, while helping them apply key musical concepts such as melody, rhythm, tone, pitch, and patience. The composition process allowed the pupils to express their creativity, resulting in a heartfelt and enlightening song that they later performed for the entire school during assembly.
This workshop is part of a broader effort to enhance the school’s cultural capital, complementing the existing music curriculum while emphasising the importance of culture. It offers meaningful and enriching experiences to all pupils. Group Two will have their workshop on November 11th in term, ensuring every student has the opportunity to explore music in a creative and reflective way.
