What a wonderful start to the new school year. It has been a long but rewarding term, with the children finding their feet in their new environment and making lots of new relationships along the way. With a huge focus on our three prime areas of learning, the children are making a strong start to continue building on these foundations as we enter Term 2.
This term the learning focus has been 'Marvellous Me'. The children have had the opportunity to share with one another what makes them unique.
The children have had a lot to learn about our school rules 'be kind, be safe and be your best'. These rules underpin everything we do, from coming to compromises around sharing to putting our best effort into our learning and interactions. Whenever we praise the children or support them with their behaviour, we always link back to these. You could try using the same language at home!
As well as following our rules, we work really hard to build positive relationships in term one. From games like 'Bug in the Rug' to help us use classmates names to spending time with adults in play, we are always building upon our cooperation and interaction skills.
The children have spent a lot of time in the outdoors building their gross motor skills on the scooters, navigating obstacle courses and staying active. The children are learning to take account of others in their space when moving energetically.
In addition, the children have been enjoying their weekly PE sessions with Wayne, where they are working on specific movement skills to become even more confident in this area.
Talking is such an essential skill, and it helps to support us to build relationships and express our feelings and needs. The adults in school have been helping children to broaden their vocabulary and everyday language by using 'My turn, your turn' to say a sentence for the children to repeat back.
Talk 4 Writing also helps children to develop their communication skills. The children have learnt the story 'The Little Red Hen' and have been retelling it in their play.
Communication is also essential in maths, and the children use sentence stems to help them explain their thinking.
In Maths, the children have developed their understanding of the numbers to 6. As well as recognising, writing and counting these amounts, the children have begun to explore addition and subtraction through part whole models.
The children have made a strong start with their phonics. Learning a new sound everyday, learning to blend. Children are grouped based on the sounds they can recall, so remember to keep up practice at home too!
In Talk 4 Writing this term, the children have learnt the classic tale 'The Little Red Hen'. The children have retold the story with actions.
In the wider curriculum, the children have explored the changes in weather during Autumn. They have looked closely at Autumn objects, using them to inspire art and science projects across the term.
Other Highlights From This Term
We have also been learning about how our families are all different. We have learned about the artist Lorna Simpson while making our own Self Portraits. We explored the season of Autumn by going on an autumn walk, making observational drawings of autumnal objects and making predictions and observations about what would be inside autumn fruits and vegetables. We learned about Harvest Festival with a whole school assembly and shared our tins and packets with families less fortunate via a food bank.
