It has been a fantastic first term in Year one and two. The children have settled into their new routines brilliantly, and we have loved getting to know our new classes. Read on to find out all of the exciting things we have been doing this term.
In art this term, the children have created their own Anglo-Saxon shields.
Year one have been focusing on colour, exploring colouring mixing and making secondary colours. Year two have been focusing on the shapes and patterns to create their shields.
This term we have been learning about Anglo-Saxons. The children have loved finding out about the Sutton Hoo archaeological site that found an old Anglo Saxon boat. They had a visitor from an Anglo-Saxon and came up with questions to ask him such as - How were weapons made? They also looked at where they came from and how they lived all those years ago.
In maths this term, we have been consolidating numbers to 10. We have revisited doubles and halves to 10, number bonds to 5, and have explored number bonds 6,7,8,9 and 10. We have moved on to addition and subtraction to 10 using number lines, and part whole models and range of concrete resources.
In maths this term, we have been revisiting place value to 100, exploring tens and ones. We have also been using our known facts to solve equation problems. The children have been introduced to bar models to support reverent facts.
During our talk for writing sessions this term we have focused on fiction and non-fiction. Our fiction unit was based on the story of 'The Three Little Pigs'. We learned the text map, before innovating it to 'The Three Little Birds and the Big, Bad Witch'. In our non fiction we looked at instruction writing using verbs, time adverbials and adjectives. We have also focused on handwriting making sure are letters are written correctly and sentences which include capital letters, full stops and finger spaces.
During our talk for writing lessons we have been looking at the story 'The Storm Whale'. We have written character descriptions using the tools adjectives, similes and show not tell. In our non fiction we have been writing fact files about whales.
