Term 3 has been another exciting, fun-filled term of learning and amazing
opportunities for Year 6. Despite the excitement of Young Voices and Time to Dance, we still managed to delve deep into the topic of Space in both our Science and our History work.
Talk for Writing
We began this term by unpicking what makes a story suspenseful. Once we had a list of tools up our sleeves we wrote Defeat the Monster stories which were truly scary, take a look at some of them below. We then moved to creating our own planets and writing Information texts on them. We now have a Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy of some amazing planets of our own imaginations! What a term's writing!
Maths
In Term 3, we got really busy with maths as they prepared for their mock SATs! A big part of this was practising arithmetic – they worked hard to get super fast at adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing. We gave them lots of practice so that they could feel confident and speedy when they faced these questions in the mock SATs.
Word problems are also a big focus. These can be tricky because they used lots of key vocabulary, and sometimes it can be tricky to figure out what to do! But we helped by showing the Year 6 children how to read the problem carefully, pick out the important bits, and break it down into simple steps. This made solving word problems a lot easier and less confusing.
In week 4 of the term, we took part in mock SATs to practise for the real test. These tests helped us to get used to the timing and the format, so that we felt more relaxed and ready when the real tests come in May.
Science and History
We took a journey into Space for our Science and our History topic this year. We explored the Solar System and gained a deeper understanding or our Earth's rotation giving us night and day and its orbit around the sun giving us a year. We found out a little about what our ancestors believed about space and the chracteristics of the planets. We learnt the acronym My Very Easy Method Just Sped Up Naming Planets and used that to remember the order. Then we got into the SPACE RACE. The brave key historical figures who pushed the boundaries of Science to achieve the firsts: the first man in space, the first woman, the first to complete a space walk and obviously the first to walk on the moon. We then explored the deeper question of who actually won the Space Race. Here are some of our amazing posters on a planet in our solar system!
Art
In Art we looked at the amazing work of Pop Artist Andy Warhol. We looked at colour theory and learnt about Primary, Secondary and Complimentary colours. We then produced our own amazing work!
Children's Mental Health Week
We enjoyed Children's Mental Health Week which ended with our wonderful OVPA has got talent. We had a number of children who took part in this and we couldn't be more proud of them. As we go into term 4 we will be thinking a great deal about the children's mental health and ensuring they go into the SATs tests in term 5 feeling positive, confident and sure of their own abilities and strengths.
