As we reach the halfway point of Year 5, we are incredibly proud of how our students have shown increasing resilience and enthusiasm in their learning.
In writing, inspired by the adventurous novel The Girl Who Stole an Elephant, students crafted gripping fiction filled with action, tension, and vivid setting descriptions. They worked hard to refine their punctuation skills and apply key writer’s tools to enhance their storytelling. In non-fiction, the focus shifted to persuasive writing, where students learned to compose formal yet emotive letters, mastering the art of argument and persuasion.
In maths, we honed our fractions skills, tackling addition and subtraction, converting between mixed numbers and improper fractions, and deepening our overall understanding of this key topic.
History took us on an exciting journey through the tension and risk of the Space Race from 1957 to 1969, while in science, we explored the wonders of the solar system, expanding our knowledge of planets and space. In PSHE, we encouraged students to think about their future ambitions, discussing careers, life goals, and aspirations. Meanwhile, in RE, we engaged in thought-provoking discussions about what it means to be a Christian and a Humanist.
PE was all about staying active—not just for fitness but also to understand the positive impact of exercise on mental well-being. In computing, students developed their digital skills by creating spreadsheets and applying formulas.
Our chess team shone at the East Sussex Games, competing against over 50 local children and securing an impressive 2nd place—demonstrating great patience, strategy, and skill.
Towards the end of the term, some of our Year 5 students took part in Pearls of the Sea, where they performed an original song inspired by The Titanic. Though nervous at first, they stepped onto the stage with confidence and delivered a fantastic performance!
This term has been a vibrant tapestry of learning, with subjects interweaving to create meaningful connections. Thank you for your continued support in your child’s education—we look forward to another exciting term ahead!
