This is a model of health and wellbeing which relates our hauora to that of a wharenui. The walls of the whare represent different aspects of our hauora and it is how these 'walls' interact that determines our overall health and wellbeing as we move through daily life.
As per the Mental Health Foundation, there are 5 main aspects to the Te Whare Tapa Whā model:
Whenua - Your connection to land
A source of life, nourishment and wellbeing for everyone. Includes soil, rocks, plants, animals and people.
Can also be thought of as your place of belonging. Where you feel safe, comfortable and able to be yourself.
Taha Tinana - Physical
How your body feels and how you care for it.
Taha Hinengaro - Emotional
Your mind, heart, conscience, thoughts and feelings. Its about how you feel as well as communicate and think.
Taha Whānau - Social
Who makes you feel you belong, who you care about and who you share life with. It's your extended relationships, community and the role you play in your space of belonging.
Taha Wairua - Spiritual
This can be your capacity for faith (religious beliefs) or your connection to values and qualities that you hold dear.
