As a leader at my high school, it is important to me to recognize all of my school's sports, as well as athletes who have accomplished great things. At The Charger, we dedicate our sport section every month almost entirely to OHS-based stories. We also often write feature stories on athletes at our school, alumni who have gone on to have great athletic achievements, and our many coaches for their hard work and dedication. Below are some sports stories that I either wrote or helped create and why I made them.
The story above is by far one of my favorite stories I have ever completed. In the 2024 Olympic Games, two OHS alumni, Shelby McEwen and Sam Kendricks, placed silver in their respective competitions. I reached out to both Kendricks and McEwen early in August of 2024 in an attempt to design a doubletruck featuring both of them and highlighting their accomplishments. Unfortunately, Shelby did not respond to my messages until late in September. Because of this, the stories were split, with the August 2024 issue featuring Sam Kendricks and the September 2024 issue featuring Shelby McEwen.
Early in 2023, the OHS tennis coach, Louis Nash, was inducted into the Mississippi Tennis Hall of Fame. I knew Nash personally because my sister had played varsity tennis for him throughout her high school years, and I wanted to personally cover this story to recognize not only his achievement, but also his hard work and dedication to the athletes of OHS. Nash has not only been coaching the OHS Tennis team for 25 years now, but also led the team to 10 consecutive state championship wins in the 6A division. This was one of my first ever articles, and I was so honored to be able to interview Nash, who often declines interviews, and share his story.
Below is one of The Charger Update episodes I was a part of. This specific episode is Episode 7 from February 28, 2024. In this episode I was the news anchor and covered the National Women and Girls in Sports Day event that was held at OHS. Not only did I report, I also helped film the event, interview female athletes and coaches, and wrote my own script. My part of this episode is from 1:21 to 2:48.
Below are stories that I myself did not write for The Charger, but were ideas that I came up with or stories that I edited.
This article was written by two of my editors, Chloe Anderson and Brody Denevan. It highlights the success that some of our senior athletes had achieved by signing to play collegiate-level sports at the Unviersity of Mississippi, the University of Alabama-Birmingham, and Yale University.
In the spring of 2024, the OHS girls powerlifting team won the 7A state championship for the first time in school history. At OHS, girls powerlifting is an often overlooked sport. When I heard that they had won their first ever state championship, I wanted to represent them in The Charger.
At The Charger, most of our sports stories center around OHS. But, we also like to create sports opinions pieces whenever there is a major debate. This article, written by staff writer Alexa Farese, criticizes the NCAA's new double contact rule for volleyball. We have also written other sports opinion pieces about golf tournaments and other rule changes.
The Charger also does predictions for football and basketball, both at the professional and college level. This article was written by staff writer Mitchell Grandjean. We also do weekly "pick-ems" on The Charger Online Instagram for college football.
