As a journalist and leader within Oxford High School, it is a goal and responsibility for me to represent everyone within the Oxford community. I work hard to ensure that all sports, races, genders, and beliefs are represented in The Charger.
At OHS, we have a large population of students who do not speak English as a first language or do not speak English at all. The majority of these students are first generation Americans from Spanish-speaking countries in South and Central America. In September 2024, I wanted to make it a priority to highlight Hispanic Heritage Month and the various Spanish clubs and communities at OHS in The Charger. As someone who has an immigrant father who is Spanish, this topic hit home for me. Within this issue we highlighted both OHS English Language Learning classes that celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month and a new club started by high school students to teach English to elementary students who primarily speak Spanish. It brought me great joy to be able to cover the Spanish communities within the Oxford School District. To the right is the cover of the September 2024 issue of The Charger, which I designed.
During my time with The Charger, one of the events we always cover is the OHS Festival of Nations. The Festival of Nations is an event held by my high school that encourages students to set up tents in the Charger Yard to share their culture. These tents are often a cumulative effort of students from the same culture, and often include brochures, food, and fun activities. In recent school years, students have also performed dances and songs native to their culture on the stage in the Charger Yard. This is an extremely important event for OHS because it gives students an opportunity to share their culture while both bonding with and educating their peers. At OHS, there are some sports that often get overlooked. Our more popular sports, such as basketball, soccer, baseball, and football always seem to have the spotlight. While making the spread for the newspaper every month, I try to incorporate stories that highlight teams that are not as talked about, giving all teams the opportunity to share their story.
At the end of the 2023-24 school year, the OHS girls powerlifting team won the state championship for the first time in school history. This was a major accomplishment, especially since girls powerlifting is a fairly new sport at OHS. Unfortunately, many students at my high school were unaware that there was a girls powerlifting team, so I jumped at the opportunity to include a story about this team's success. The girls powerlifting team was overjoyed to be included in our issue of the newspaper, and the entire staff got to connect with this team as they visited our classroom for interviews. This article was in our April/May 2024 issue of The Charger, and is pictured above.

After becoming editor-in-chief, my associate editor and I decided that we wanted to include a column of the newspaper in the Nov/Dec issue to reviewing any fall sports whose season had officially ended for both girls and boys teams. For the Nov/Dec 2024 issue, this meant the column was composed of volleyball, cross country, golf, and swim, and there was another article (not pictured) dedicated to the 2024 football season. We intend to do something in a similar fashion in the April/May 2025 issue to ensure that we include all spring sports at Oxford High. These small season reviews help us promote, include, and cover all sports teams at OHS in The Charger. The season recap column from the Nov/Dec 2024 issue is pictured to the right.
