My name is Kendall Kipping, and I am a senior at Oxford High School in Oxford, Mississippi. I have been a part of my school's newspaper, The Charger, for the past three years. I am currently the editor-in-chief and online editor of The Charger, and in the fall semester of this past school year I worked as the opinions editor on top of my other titles. I am a member of the Charger Media Group, which means I write/edit scripts, photograph events, film content for select CMG productions, and publicize our work on social media. I am committed to the University of Mississippi, and hope to work for their award-winning newspaper, the Daily Mississippian. In the past, I have placed 2nd at SIPA (Southern Interscholastic Press Association) in the Best Writing Contest for Newsprint Editorial Column division in the 2023-2024 competition. In the MSPA 2023-2024 competition I won Best Newspaper News Story, and The Charger won Best Opinion Writing, which I was opinions editor of that year. I am also involved in the OHS Pickleball Club, R.I.S.E., OHS Go Green, and the OHS Cross Country team.
I began working for The Charger my sophomore year of high school. What started as an elective class for me quickly grew into something that I loved. I loved chasing stories, writing articles, designing pages, and the community that came with being a part of newspaper. After discovering my passion for journalism, I put great effort into being as involved as possible, not only in The Charger, but for the Charger Media Group, The Charger Update, and more. Being a part of newspaper is more than an extracurricular to me, it has become a form of self-expression and a way for me to find my identity. Throughout all my years of high school, the newspaper community is one of the only constants in my ever-changing life. Being a part of The Charger has been a defining part of my high school experience, and taking the leap of joining my school's newspaper staff was one of the best and most rewarding decisions I have ever made. The experience of working for The Charger has helped me become the person I am today, as I learned skills such as leadership, teamwork, and dedication through this class.
