Inside of the OHS newspaper class, we also host several other types of journalism. On top of our monthly issue of the newspaper, we also do broadcast productions such as The Season, The Charger Sports Report, and The Charger Update, as well as podcasts, Last Friday and The Bolt Buzz.
Broadcast
The Charger Update was a new project I started my junior year with a few other classmates, specifically Anderson Shows, Chloe Anderson, and Madison Pegues. Before this, broadcasts were foreign to the vast majority of my staff. We spent immense amounts of time teaching ourselves how to make a broadcast—coming up with stories, creating scripts, filming, interviewing, and editing to create each episode of The Charger Update. It was certainly a learning curve, but I fell in love with the broadcast process through it all. Below are links to some of my favorite episodes of this boradcast that I have been a part of.
In this episode of The Charger Update, I served as one of the main anchors. Alongside my co-anchor, Anderson Shows, we wrote a script, set up our equipment at the filming location, filmed our segments, conducted interviews, and then edited all of the film to create this episode.
In this episode, I covered the celebratory breakfast that OHS hosted for National Women and Girls in Sports Day in 2024. All female athletes and their coaches came to OHS for a free breakfast, free t-shirts, and pictures. After previously writing my script and filming part of my segment, I also wrote questions and brought a mic and camera to the event to interview coaches and athletes live.
This is episode 8 of The Charger Update from March 27, 2024. In this episode, I performed as a news anchor to cover the college and career fair. My team and I wrote a script, traveled the the fair, and filmed content. Not only did we film my segment, but also interviewed OHS students that attended to ask them what the college and career fair was like for them.
Podcast
At The Charger, we aim to have one podcast per school year. In the 2023-2024 school year, it was "Last Friday" with Jack Harper and Brady Stinnett. This year, the podcast is "The Bolt Buzz", with Howard Hyneman, James Blackwood, and Weldon Wilkinson. While I am not one of the personalities for the podcast, I do manage this team. I ensure that they are posting episodes bi-weekly, writing scripts and questions, conducting interviews, and editing episodes.
This episode of The Bolt Buzz is from the 2024 fall semester, with Howard Hyneman and James Blackwood as anchors. I never appear in the episode, but I did work behind the scenes. I helped Howard and James create scripts for their outro/intro, and write questions for them to asks their guests. In each of these clips I am behind the camera silently helping them film, and after shooting all of our content I taught them how to edit the videos together and post it to our Charger Media Group YouTube account. While this may not be the most perfect podcast episode, it was such an enjoyable experience for me to immerse myself in a form of journalism other than newspaper and teach two of my peers how to create something as fun as a podcast.
