The memoir was one of the first big assignments given to us at the start of the school year and we were given 4 different memoir options to write and I chose to write a memoir about my experience as a teen in the United States. In this assignment our memoir had to maintain a consistent perspective, establish a clear time frame/setting, and utilize dialogue, sensory details, and figurative language. Although we wrote drafts before to prepare, this was one of the assignments I believe I didn't do as well on because we were just starting school and I was just starting to get a feel for things. The assignment itself I felt as if gave us room to be creative and really branch to explore different perspectives that we really haven't considered before. Overall while I didn't do as well as I wanted to on this assignment I believe it was a good assignment to start us off.
Before we started our first book, Of Mice and Men we had to do research on different topics that were prominent during the time period of the book in order to really understand what was going on in the book. This assignment was given to us in groups so as a group we can do research on one topic and then present that information to the class as they took notes. While the writing aspect was a lot, this assignment was one of my best assignments for the marking period because I was able to find research and present the information I found. Through completing this assignment I was able to gain background information and historical context for the book Of Mice and Men.
In the text Of Mice and Men we saw different themes presented and because of this we were given the final assignment of writing 5 paragraph essay answering the prompt, How does Steinbeck develop the major themes of (theme) or what does Of Mice and Men reveal about (theme), and how does Steinbeck reveal this message. This assignment takes into account everything we've learned while reading the book and allows us to use that to answer the prompt. I chose the first prompt question and was able to answer it in the essay and while I faced little difficulty in finding evidence for my answer, the assignment went smoothly for the most part.
Just like the Of Mice and Men Pre-Reading Presentations assignment, we had to do research on different topics that were prominent during the time period of the book in order to really understand what was going on in the book. This assignment was given to us in groups so as a group we can do research on one topic and then present that information to the class as they took notes. We had to teach the class about the topic we were given, give them an exit ticket and also play a fun interactive game with them as the teacher. Overall this assignment as it gave us historical context and was fun at the end.
This assignment was to show our mastery of Ethos, Pathos and Logos, the three appeals. We were supposed to choose brands to research and write research papers exploring their use of the three appeals. We were supposed to choose more than one appeal or use all three appeals for whatever brand we chose. I chose Coca Cola and wrote about how they used all three appeals in various commercials and advertisements. This assignment allowed us to explore the means and ways of how the appeals are used and affect us in our daily lives.
This assignment was part of the research papers where we explored named brands use of the three appeals. Since I chose Coca Cola and wrote about how they used all three appeals in various commercials and advertisements I was supposed to make a poster for Coca Cola that used more than one of the appeals. This assignment allowed us to be creative and look for different ways to showcase our chosen brand and draw people towards it.
For this assignment, we were supposed to decide, after reading Romeo and Juliet who was most to blame for the ending. We were put in groups and given 4 options to pick and create a debate on how the person we chose was most to blame and make the other options seem innocent or less guilty. Each group had to paint their chosen person as the bad guy while others seem like angels in a sense. Overall this debate was fun as each group tried hard to make their person seem evil and through this debate I was able to get a better feel for support a side even when I personally don't agree or have a different option.
