Student Attendance Expectations
OKCPS offers bus transportation for some students. Here's how it works and what you need to know:
Students who:
Live more than 1.5 miles away from their schools.
Are in special education programs that require transportation.
Go to one of the application schools listed below and live more than 1.5 miles away from their schools but in the busing area for the school:
Southeast High and Middle Schools: From the very south of the school district up to Reno Avenue.
Classen School of Advanced Studies Middle and High School at Northeast: From Reno Avenue up to N. 50th Street.
Belle Isle Enterprise Middle School: From N. 50th Street up to the very north of the school district.
If you apply for a transfer to a school that isn't your neighborhood school, the school district does not provide transportation for you.
if you live within 1.5 miles of your school, your family is responsible for getting you there.
All bus transportation follows state laws and school board rules.
The bus driver is in charge when students are on the bus. To keep this privilege, students must follow rules that help keep everyone safe on the bus:
Always respect bus drivers and assistants; follow their directions.
Stay seated while the bus is moving and keep all parts of your body inside the bus.
Use inside voices and keep your hands and objects to yourself so you don't distract the driver.
Help keep the bus clean and safe by making sure the aisles are clear of bags, instruments, or other items.
Don't eat or drink on the bus.
Don't mess with any bus equipment.
These school rules also apply to buses:
No e-cigarettes, smoking, or chewing tobacco.
No alcohol or illegal drugs on the bus.
Don't get on the bus if you've used alcohol or illegal drugs.
Guns, weapons, or weapons look-alikes are against state law and are not allowed.
Riding the school bus is a privilege. The District is required by law to offer students bus transportation. The result of breaking bus rules can mean you lose the privilege to ride the bus and may include other consequences from the school. Bus drivers or assistants report to the transportation director when a student does not follow the rules. The director will work with your school principal to handle the issues.
If a principal or they transportation director tells a student they can't ride the bus, student cannot ride again until they get permission from the principal or transportation director.
All OKCPS buses have cameras that record both sound and video. School principals, assigned school staff, and the transportation director can use these recordings to help with student behavior.
The school district does not provide car seats for babies or young children. If you bring your own, it must meet safety standards. All wheelchairs on the bus must have lap and shoulder belts. If you have questions, call your school or the Transportation Department at 587-RIDE (587-7433).
You can find information about bus stops and routes on the OKCPS website at the Where’s My Bus Stop link. Stops and routes can change, and they'll be updated online as soon as possible. Families are responsible for telling the school if their home or transportation address changes. The school will then tell the Transportation Department.
(405) 587-1151 or (405) 587-1152.
Transportation is provided for students who have a 504 plan or Special Education services when the need is listed in the plan or program as a need for them to participate in school.
For students with a 504 Plan, transportation is only provided if stated in the plan.
While waiting for transportation to be arranged, families are responsible for taking and picking up their children.
Always tell the school about any address changes. The school will then let the Transportation and Special Education Services departments know.
To keep routes on time, bus drivers can only wait up to two minutes for students to get on the bus.
If your child receives special transportation as part of their Special Education or 504 Plan, please call the dispatcher at 587-1151 or 587-1152 if your child will be absent from the bus. Call again when they will start riding the bus again. If a student doesn't ride or call in for three days in a row, they will be removed from the route until a parent or guardian calls Transportation to say the student will ride again.
