I am thrilled to share that our school has been selected to be featured as part of Operation Remembrance, a national educational initiative known as the "11 Days of Remembrance." This project shares student-led video documentaries from November 1st to November 11th, ensuring the tradition of remembrance continues and engaging youth across Canada.
This project is a fantastic example of cross-curricular collaboration: Our Grade 12 Communications Technology students, guided by Mr. Scott Hughes, handled the filming and editing. The content and historical research were prepared by our Grade 10 Canadian History students. The short film features a moving performance of "In Flanders Fields" by the Glebe Collegiate Choir, led by Mr. Jason Watts.
Our video pays tribute to Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae and his iconic poem. A little fun fact is that the poem's inspiration, Alexis Helmer, was a former student of Ottawa Collegiate Institute (OCI), which later split to form Lisgar and Glebe Collegiate Institute in 1922.
This initiative also fostered an exciting partnership with Guelph Collegiate Vocational Institute (GCVI), McCrae's alma mater. To honour the poet's legacy and reinforce the theme of remembrance, We collaborated with GCVI to place a "Walking Them Home" sign for John McCrae on their front lawn in his honour.
You can watch the powerful student-created video here: https://youtu.be/MPl3HXh2zlI?si=MeJ5Bro2KPo69Y0C
All students involved will travel to the Chateau Laurier to present the video as part of the national broadcast of Operation Remembrance. They will then attend and watch the 2025 National Remembrance Day Ceremony at the War Memorial.
Please join me in congratulating all the students and the staff members, and Mr. Hughes, who made this incredible project and collaboration possible.Â
