Samuel Lewis Silver served in the first world war as a Flight Sergeant. He was born on January 1st in 1913 in Russia(Ukraine). His current location is 229 Catherine Street. He was named after his father who was also named Samuel Silver, and his mother’s name was Rachel Chaikowksy. Samuel L. Silver worked as a store manager and he was an only child. He went to Lisgar High School for secondary education from 1930 to 1935. He was 29 years old when he sadly passed away while serving in the war. His favorite pastimes were fishing and hunting. He had brown eyes and black hair and was a white hair.
Samuel Lewis Silver was enlisted March 20th 19 1922. After being conscripted he attended an interview for the R.C.A.F. Samuel was a pilot in the Royal Canadian Air Force Unit and he was later promoted to a sergeant. He also did not receive any sort of award. While serving he contracted measles and gonorrhea. He was not severely wounded until his death, and he was only hospitalized for his diseases. Before enlisting he was a store manager in Ottawa. According to medical records he was 5’3 ½ tall and weighed in at around 135 pounds at 29 years of age. His eyesight was very good, as he had 2.50 in both eyes (20/20).
Samuel L. Silver is honored in the Rheinberg War Cemetery in Germany. After air operations on May 25th, 1944, he was reported missing and presumed dead. His plane was shot down and crashed above Oldzheim, Germany. On January 15th 1946 his wife and mother were given word of his death.

Memorial – A beautiful monument was installed in 2015 at the Jewish Community Cemetery on Bank Street, honouring those brave men of the Ottawa Jewish Community who fought and lost their lives in war. The three panel granite monument lists Ottawa community members who served and fell in the Great War, World War II, Israeli War of Independence and while on active duty with the Israeli Army.
