Top Five Local Ice Cream Shops

by Ambika Singh

The latest news on the reopening of many businesses in Ontario has really made me happy and inspired me to do a review of local businesses serving my most favorite dessert - Ice Cream. I love Ice Cream and want to recommend the following Top 5 Local places to go for Ice Cream: #SupportLocal

Moo Shu Ice Cream & Kitchen

Moo Shu was the first one on the list. This ice-cream shop has been quite popular and has been reviewed 4.7/5.0 stars by many people. Even I feel quite tempted to try out their ice-cream. Their description states, “modern shop selling craft ice cream with unique, Asian-inspired flavors & a rotating menu of snacks.” With the lockdown in place, they are currently selling pre-packaged items only at the door.

Stella Luna Gelato Cafe

First I would like to start off with a little history as to how this cafe developed into its present form. The Stella Luna Gelato Cafe came into existence through the efforts of the founders, Tammy and Alessandro from Italy. A backstory of the shop: “They knew what a good gelato should taste like; what kind of consistency it should have, when it was fresh and when it wasn't. They knew that with the right decorative topping; it could become a work of art. But they wanted to make gelato from simple and wholesome ingredients rather than with pre-measured powdered mixes. So in 2010, Tammy attended the most reputable and successful artisan gelato training centre in the world, and trained under Italy's finest Gelato Masters. The Stella Luna secret is the art of meticulously balancing recipes, foods in the freshness and the quality of the ingredients. Stella Luna products are prepared on site, from scratch, every day."

Brett’s Ice Cream

Transport back in time to when soft served was all the rage, and flavour swirls were the hot new thing. A relatively unknown local ice cream joint, it is a Kanata neighbourhood favourite! Those who have lived nearby have all of the best things to say about Brett’s, tied to fond childhood memories. It is a go-to spot in Ottawa for quality soft serve ice cream. It is open for pick up at their window!

The Beachconers Microcreamery

During covid, they are also allowing takeouts. The Britannia microcreamery makes everything from scratch, with locally sourced ingredients when possible. Their flavours are always changing; Britannia Brownie, Sugar Cookie, Blueberry Lavender, Peanut Butter & Honey and Raspberry Lemon are some of their past rotation. They carry vegan options as well. Beachconers has a prime location right near the Ottawa gem, Britannia Beach. It is attached to the Britannia Coffeehouse – grab a latte or a scone to go with your cone.
