The Bright Sessions
Description:
Dr. Bright is a therapist for the strange and unusual: those with supernatural abilities. She records each of her patients’ sessions, for research purposes, documenting their struggles and growth. But the recordings also reveal Dr. Bright’s motivations… and what lengths she’s willing to go to reach her goals.
This was the first audio drama I completed, and it still remains my favourite. The Bright Sessions has an odd but enjoyable intimacy and is incredibly grounded for a sci-fi podcast. I adored the characters and their journeys. The voice acting and writing are fantastic, evoking so many emotions, both heartwarming and heartbreaking. I also loved the take on superpowers in this podcast. The characters aren’t trying to save the world; they’re just trying to get through their lives with a minimal amount of chaos. Plus, the mental health representation is great.
Wooden Overcoats
Description:
Rudyard Funn runs a funeral home, with the help of his twin sister and mortician, Antigone, and dogsbody, Georgie. They are the only funeral parlour on the island of Piffling, and pride themselves on “getting the body in the coffin in the ground on time.” But when incredibly charming newcomer Eric Chapman opens his funeral parlour, Funn Funerals must go to great lengths to beat the competition.
Wooden Overcoats is a hilarious sitcom, perfect for when you need something lighthearted. The dialogue is clever and witty, and the narrative is so unique. The voice acting is phenomenal, and truly makes the podcast one of the best I’ve listened to.
36 Questions
Description:
A podcast musical about an estranged couple trying to save their marriage using the 36 Questions to Fall in Love.
I will admit that I didn’t love the third act as much as the first two, but it is a hundred percent still worth a listen. The music was incredibly entertaining, and the singing is fantastic. It’s also fairly short, only three episodes, so it’s perfect as an introduction to the audio drama world.
Popcorn Psychology
Description (from Spotify):
Three licensed therapists break down and analyze popular movies and characters from the perspectives of an individual, child, and a marriage and family therapist.
I’ve always been fascinated by the behaviour of movie characters and how their past trauma influences their actions, so this podcast was perfect. They go over the characters’ symptoms and reactions and how accurate the portrayals are and provide potential treatments. It’s both entertaining and educational.
88 Cups of Tea
Description:

This podcast is perfect for those who wish to improve their craft, want to learn more about best-selling authors and their lives, or are interested in the publishing industry. Yin Chang’s questions are always thought-provoking, and she gives lots of time for the guests to answer fully.
