Internship Registration and CPT Process Information

Internship/CPT Process Information

Both Domestic and International Students with an internship offer are required to complete internship paperwork with the department (international students will also need to complete the CPT process), and register for an Internship course. The complete process is explained in detail below (all subject to change):

The registration deadline for Summer 2024 Internships (and CPT for International students) is June 17th, 2024 at 3:00pm (ET).

Final offer letter submissions are due by June 13th, 2024 at 5:00pm (do not wait until the last minute - there is no guarantee that offer letters submitted around the deadline will move forward due to processing times).

Students must have completed 18 credits* and be in good academic standing before becoming eligible to take the internship course and file for CPT.

*Students with fewer than 18 credits but who completed their undergraduate degree in the United States immediately prior to joining the program may be considered for internship approval.

Students are not required to complete an internship to graduate, but may elect to choose the Internship for MS I/Internship for MS II courses

as part of their program.

Students who take a maximum of 4.5 credits (including this course which is 1.5 credits) may work up to 40 hours per week.*

*International students who are approved for full-time internships may not exceed working 40 hours per week/work overtime in any circumstances.

Students who take more than 4.5 credits (including this course which is 1.5 credits) may only work 20 hours per week.

Regarding earliest and latest internship start and end dates:

Please note that unless otherwise stated by the Department of Technology Management and Innovation, and regardless of permitted dates from previous semesters, internship start and end dates must fall within the start and end dates of an academic term (as listed on the NYU Academic Calendar). An internship may not start prior to the first day of classes, and may not continue after the end of a term.

If there are any adjustments to the dates of eligibility made by Tandon academic leadership, the department will send a communication and update the relevant information on this page. Otherwise, all students must abide by the semester dates in the academic calendar and collaborate with their companies to plan their internship dates accordingly. No exceptions will be made.

Please note the Internship Academic Misconduct Policy:

Very important: Please note that CP-GY 9911/9921 Internship for MS I/II - TM01 are Pass/Fail courses. As such, any confirmed instances of Academic Misconduct, as outlined in the NYU Tandon School of Engineering Student Code of Conduct, will result in the academic penalty of an “F” grade for the entire course.

Be forewarned, that an “F” grade in Internship I will incur an additional penalty:

Students cannot enroll in a subsequent internship course if they have an incomplete or a fail grade (F) from a previous internship course.  Per the NYU Tandon School of Engineering Academic Bulletin.

To reiterate, if you are found to have engaged in academic misconduct during your Internship I course, you will receive an “F” grade and will be automatically ineligible to participate in a second internship (Internship II) as part of your current academic program.

Step 1:

Students need to submit their offer letters to the TMI department through the Offer Letter Review Request Form. Email submissions will NOT be accepted. The offer letter should be written on official company letterhead and needs to contain the following MANDATORY information:

1. Name, Physical Address, and Website URL of the Company

2. Start Date of the Internship (no earlier than May 20th, 2024, and no later than June 24th, 2024)

3. End Date of the Internship (no later than August 16th, 2024)

4. Title of the Position

5. Compensation Information**

6. A Detailed Description of Duties that will be Performed

7. Name and Contact Information (email AND phone) of direct supervisor

8. Hours worked per week or total number of hours (Students need to work for a minimum of 240 hours over a duration of at least 8 weeks)

*Please note that NO permission numbers will be issued unless the offer letter contains ALL of the information listed above. There will be absolutely no exceptions. If you were not prompted to upload your offer letter before submitting the Offer Letter Review Request Form, that means you are missing required information.

**Additionally, the department will not be approving unpaid internships unless:

1) The internship meets the criteria for unpaid internships as defined by OGS (educational in nature, no benefit to the company).

2) The company provides NYU Tandon a letter, written on official company letterhead, stating the company is in compliance with the Department of Labor guidelines for unpaid internships and they are not deriving any benefit as a company from the work you will be conducting.

Note that commission-based internships are ineligible for the internship course and CPT. Additionally, students can only receive approval to work in one internship through the internship course per semester - multiple concurrent internships are not permitted.

***Please note that none of the aforementioned criteria should be interpreted as a blanket approval of any internship offer that is received. Ultimately it is up to the Department of Technology Management and Innovation to approve or deny any and all internship experiences at its discretion.

Step 2:

Once the offer letter is approved by the Department (1-2 weeks minimum for review), fill out the Department CPT Info Form (provided to students after offer letter approval).

Step 3:

Permission numbers for the appropriate internship courses will be issued by us upon validating the submitted forms.

Register for your course.

*International Students only - complete steps 4 and 5

Step 4:

After successful registration, please follow the OGS procedure for the new digital F-1 CPT Application.

Step 5:

OGS issues a new I-20 within 1-2 weeks.
