Note: The Schack Advising Office does not manage the deferral policy or process. For questions, please email sps.admissions@nyu.edu
To submit a deferral request, you must accept your offer of admission and pay the non-refundable enrollment deposit. Once that is paid and recorded in the system, please log in to your online application portal and submit a deferral request by clicking the 'Contact Admissions' link found on the right-hand side of the screen. The Deferral Request form will be found on the next page. (Please note that if you do not see the deferral request form, the deadline has passed and the form is closed.)
Admitted students may defer their enrollment once, for up to 1 year from their original term of acceptance. For example, if you were admitted to the Summer 2026 term, you can either defer to Fall 2026, Spring 2027, or Summer 2027.
Deferral requests are accepted for the following reasons:
Military obligation
Personal Health
Health of an Immediate Family Member
Student Visa Delays
Pending scholarship or loan approval from external resources.
Denial of financial aid/funding.
Other
If the request does not fall within one of the above categories, please provide a reason for the deferral and any applicable documentation so that the request will be considered (but not guaranteed).
Applicants who are not approved for a deferral may request that their application materials be moved to the next admissions cycle, and the application fee will be waived.

*Students who wish to defer will be required to reapply after the deadlines listed above. The request form will close after the deadlines.
