Advising is a partnership between the student and the academic advisor; it is essential to the academic experience and vital to student success. Academic advisors are the primary contacts to the Schack student community; they guide and support students in achieving their academic, personal and professional goals. Students are responsible for being fully engaged in their academic experience by making informed decisions about their academic, professional, and personal goals.

Learn and adhere to institutional policies and procedures and deadlines that govern undergraduate or graduate study ranging from drop/add dates and withdrawal deadlines to academic and student conduct policies.
Helpful tip: When emailing your advisor with any registration question, ALWAYS include your N#, so that they can easily find you in the system. It’s a nice courtesy that is very much appreciated by all administrative staff and faculty. Some students include their N# in their nyu.edu email signature.
Read your NYU email regularly. You will receive many important emails from the department and from the University that may contain instructions for registration, graduation dates, financial notices, important requirements, and more!
Having trouble finding past emails in your inbox? Click here for some tips for searching your NYU email.
Do your research (first)! Much of the information you are looking for can be found in an email that has already been sent to you, this Student Guide, or the NYU website.
Do not email the same inquiry to multiple advisors and/or faculty members. If you would like multiple people to receive the same inquiry, please cc (copy) them all on the same email.
Be mindful of email response times. The standard response time for email is 1-2 business days. Keep in mind, responses may take longer during busy times of the academic calendar (registration, graduation, etc). If you do not hear back from your advisor within 2-3 business days, it is appropriate to follow up.
Office hours are Monday through Friday 9:00am-5:00pm. Emails will be answered during these hours.
The Schack Advising team will host an online group advisement session for students to meet their academic advisor and peers, and ask any questions they have about NYU and Schack.
