How to Add Videos in Canvas
Updated 07/06/22
In Canvas, users can add a streaming video to a Canvas course page, discussion post, or assignment by adding the video's link or embed code and using the Canvas link insertion tool or the Rich Content Editor. (Note: Some resources do not have an embedding option; they may offer a direct link option instead.)
To navigate to a resource's embedding instructions, select a resource below:
YouTube
Navigate to your Canvas page or place where you would like to embed the video and click Edit. In the editor, select the Tools menu and Apps OR the Apps button in the toolbar.
Select YouTube from the dropdown menu. (If you have not embedded with this resource before, choose View All first.)
Select Embed or click the down arrow for more options on the size of your embedded video.
Alternative instructions:
In YouTube, select the “Share” link under the title.
Copy the embed code from the pop-up window.

OneDrive File
With the integration of Office 365 and Canvas, you can embed your OneDrive files into items you're working on in your Canvas course. This will show links you and students can follow to view the document. Note: Files embedded this way cannot be edited, downloaded, or printed. Keep this in mind if you typically give students the option of downloading or printing an offline copy of documents. Using this method, they will not have that option. Further, you will not be able to edit the document after following the link in Canvas, but you can still do so by navigating to the document in your OneDrive account.
Navigate to your Canvas page or place where you would like to embed the video and click Edit. In the editor, select the Tools menu and Apps OR the Apps button in the toolbar.
From the pop-up menu, choose Microsoft Office 365. (If you have not embedded with this resource before, choose View All first.)
The pop-up will change, showing you your OneDrive folders and files. Navigate through the folders and find the file you wish to embed.
Note: If this is the first time you've used Office 365 in Canvas, you must Sign in using your Cougarnet email address and password.
Check the box next to the file and click the Link (to create a hyperlink) or Embed (to embed your video file in the Rich Content Editor box) button. The file will be inserted into the text you are working on.
Continue to edit the item, or if you're done, Save it.
