Best practices for Uploading Files

Upload Files to Files in Your Canvas Site

When you need to upload revised versions of files to your course, it is advisable to always go to Files in your course site. Uploading files directly to a module or in the Rich Content Editor results in multiple copies of the same file.

By always uploading to Files, Canvas will prompt you whether to replace the original file or rename it if you are uploading a duplicate file. By choosing “Replace,” you will overwrite the old file, which streamlines your file storage and eliminates the need to update the links in your site. Students will always see the correct version of the file, regardless of the location where it is linked.

You can upload multiple files at once or even upload a zip file and then have Canvas expand it, creating a folder containing all the files. If you prefer, you can leave it as a zip file if you need students to access it that way.

For those using the Canvas Teacher app, you can upload photos or videos from your smartphone directly to your Canvas site. Check out the instructions for adding files from iOS and adding files from Android for more information.
