As a Canada Soccer Quality Soccer Program, we are committed to bringing a standards-based program to our community. In that vein, we host all the courses that a Rep., Developmental/Competitive, or Fully Qualified Team Official needs to coach local soccer.
NeW and noteworthy as of 2023:
Before coaching in Active Start, Fundamentals, Learn to Train, and Soccer for Life, in Community, Recreational & House League soccer, coaches must have completed both Respect in Sport and the Coaching Soccer in Canada Module of the Canada Soccer Grassroots Coach Education to meet the Canada Soccer Coach Education Minimum Standards...and be qualified to coach in a sanctioned club's program, like NorWests'.
Canada Soccer 2023 Grassroots Standards
You can see via this link ^ that the requirements for coaches are split into two: a Full Safe Sport Roster and a Modified Safe Sport Roster. The online theory courses for LTPD age groups are currently included with the minimum requirement of the Coaching Soccer in Canada Module for coaches to complete at their discretion (LTPD stages listed by colour above).
As always, we love to Catch you Being Good, so our club will continue to offer rewards for coaches who complete the Full Safe Sport Roster to become Fully Qualified Team Officials when coaching with us!
Rep/Competitive/EMDSL coaches scroll down for Full Safe Sport Roster requirements!
Canada Soccer breaks Grassroots Coaching into two streams: Community & Competitive.

A vulnerable sector police check must be completed every 3 years.
A Declaration Waiver must be submitted to your club for each season in between.
If you do not live in London, visit the police station nearest your home for a VSPC.
IF you have submitted your VSPC you must submit a Declaration Waiver the following season you apply to coach.
This is a record check that can be used for:
Employment
Unpaid student placement
Volunteer work
This level of record check can only be done if you will be directly responsible for children under 18 years, elderly or disabled people. If that is not the case, then you must fill out a Criminal Record Check (CRC) or a Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check (CRJMC) instead.
NCCP-approved Canada Soccer Grassroots Coach Education Workshops are for Grassroots Coaches! The Grassroots Coach Education workshops are now available online. Coaches must complete a workshop at each level they coach:
Active Start (4-6),
Fundamentals (7-9),
Learn to Train (10-13),
Soccer for Life (14+),
To ensure the Grassroots Coach Education workshops are more accessible and to provide greater flexibility in when these courses can be delivered, coaches will be able to work at their own pace to complete the course material. In addition to the online theory component of the course, there will also be a practical, in-person, on-field session to conclude the workshop, which NorWest Soccer hosts each spring. The duration of the session depends on the level being completed.
To access the online theory component of the course, coaches can purchase a key from the Canada Soccer Coach Education Store.
Once the key has been acquired, it can be redeemed at the Canada Soccer Academy.
The Respect in Sport program was introduced in 2011 to provide coaches with invaluable information about coaching and essential approaches to working with youngsters in an appropriately respectful and nurturing coaching environment. RiS is an e-learning program for coaches, trainers, managers and any adult with a supervisory role over youth involved in soccer. It is designed to assist participants in identifying and dealing with abuse, neglect, harassment and bullying in sports.
The online course curriculum is broken into six (6) 30-minute modules and includes audio/visual presentations, quizzes, and printable handouts. Another beneficial feature of the program is that it does not need to be done all at once; it can be completed at your leisure. We are hoping that coaches will recognize the long-term value of the program because of the values it promotes, and also what it teaches regarding important practical guidelines for youth coaches.
(HIGHLY recommended for all involved in Girls' Sport)
Keeping Girls in Sport is an online resource that helps coaches and youth activity leaders to create safe and respectful environments for female athletes.
NW Rec NOTE:
The above online courses are great novice coaching courses. Canada Soccer requires them for all recreation/house league level coaches as part of Coach Orientation as of 2023.
Outlined here: Canada Soccer Grassroots Standards.
Coaches who complete the above will be sent a code to our house league Early Access Registration Rate for the following season.
Coaches who also complete the outlined in-person courses below receive club credit equal to 50% of their player registration fee for each team they coach as a Fully Qualified coach. Credits are applied manually by club staff at the end of each season.
The courses listed above are required for a Full Safe Sport Roster in Ontario Soccer. They do NOT have to be taken annually; most are required only once in a team official's career (Respect in Sport - Activity Leader is the exception and is required every five years).
Some courses overlap and ARE transferable if you are involved in other children's activities. You and/or your club registrar can use the NCCP number to check what you already have to avoid duplication.
