Acceptable Use: What you are agreeing to do

Data within this service is owned by Department of Health and Social Care. Department of Health and Social Care is the Data Controller. Data can only be copied, downloaded or shared with 3rd parties with written permission and in line with these Terms and Conditions of Use. Specific queries can be made through the information contact listed below.

Data contained within the Open Data Platform (ODP) is UNPUBLISHED and can be used for internal management information only, to support day operations and decision making.

Users of this service will respect the privacy of personal data as described in the ODP Privacy Notice​.


You are expected to adhere to standard information security good practice, for example:

  • not sharing accounts
  • choosing secure passwords
  • only accessing confidential information when you cannot be overlooked
  • not sharing data with people who are not authorised to see it

This list is not exhaustive.


You are expected to:

  • Retain data only for as long as it is necessary and securely destroy it when no longer required
  • Only present data if you have a clear understanding of its limitations and ensure that the audience is aware of the source of the data
  • Adhere to any relevant data sharing agreements
  • Maintain the integrity of the data that you download from ODP. If data is fundamentally amended or changed in any way, ODP must no longer be referenced as the source in wider materials
  • Only use data in relation to research related activities. These are defined as activities along the research delivery pathway conducted in relation to, but not limited to, the research idea; study development; study planning, monitoring and performance managing; study set-up and start-up; study recruitment and follow-up; and/or study closure
  • Not download and/or archive any data from ODP and not share the information with anyone who do not have access to the system in their own right
  • Respect the data that you are using in line with the ​ODP Privacy Notice
  • Adhere to any prevailing legislation
  • Seek permission from the CRNCC (ODP@nihr.ac.uk) if you wish to re-use any data from ODP for any other purpose i.e. referencing ODP data in materials to be published and/or be made publically available. It is the decision of the CRN CC as to whether to allow such re-use
  • Use the data to; analyse and/or identify current and/or historical trends / make assumptions regarding future trends; use it in metrics, indicators and management dashboards/reports; use it to inform decisions and arising actions; bring it to the attention of other managers where access has also been granted
