Video and audio are critical to delivering an engaging learning experience. Brightspace can help NICC instructors harness their full instructional capacity through multimedia lecture capture, personalized video feedback, and two-way audio/visual interactions.
The Brightspace Media Library is the optimal place to record and store unlimited video and audio content with or without screen-sharing. Media in this location can be inserted or embedded into all of your courses. The Media Library tools include captioning and editing.
Brightspace allows instructors and students to record audio or video (no screen-share) directly in discussions, assignments, quiz responses, assignment feedback, and anywhere else you see the text editing toolbar. These recordings are stored in each user's Media Library.
Audacity is a free, open-source audio recording and editing tool that can be used to create podcasts and other audio projects. Visit the Audacity website to learn more and download the application. We recommend this tutorial video for learning how to use Audacity.
Padlet is a collaboration tool that includes many media options, including video, audio, and screen recording directly in the platform. Free users are limited to three active Padlets. Watch this video to learn more.
Many YouTube videos can be shared in your Brightspace courses by sharing a link or embedding the video directly into your content. Please review this copyright information before adding YouTube videos to your course.
NICC students' YouTube accounts are disabled, so students asked to record videos using YouTube will need to use a personal Gmail account. DIID recommends faculty utilize Panopto for all student (and faculty) recording needs.
Embedding video (Video Note, YouTube, etc.) directly into a module or content item description field often reduces some functionality. For example, the Class Progress tool is unable to accurately track and reflect time spent viewing embedded videos.
DIID recommends creating content item video embed links that open in Brightspace, when possible.
DIID recommends avoiding the autoplay setting in Video Note to maximize student control and avoid occasional audio issues.
DIID recommends allowing online learners the option to submit written (text), video (Video Note), and audio recordings, where practical, across Discussions, Quizzes, and Assignments.
Using Zoom, Panopto, or even a simple USB flash drive, faculty at NICC can use one of our Revolution Lightboards to enhance their classes in a variety of ways.
Produce short lecture-type videos to “flip” the classroom. In a flipped classroom, students watch a video lecture before class, and faculty use class time to focus on problem-solving and applications of the lecture material.
Create tutorials for solving difficult problems or explanations of more complex topics that might otherwise take up a significant amount of class time.
Share annotations to illustrate problems and processes on the same plane as other visual elements (e.g., flowcharts, diagrams, pictures).
Answer a complex problem using the Lightboard in real-time during virtual office hours over Zoom.
The Lightboards are available on the Peosta and Calmar campuses and can be reserved online in Ad Astra. For more information, discover the Capture Lectures with Lightboard training course via the NewsHub, or access the Lightboard Room Guide directly to learn more about our Revolution lightboards at NICC.
