Copyright Requirements
Overview
This standard ensures that course content created, selected, and vetted by the instructor adheres to copyright laws and requirements.
Summary of Evidence
Course content presented in Brightspace complies with copyright law and related college policies, and includes proper attribution when necessary.
Rationale
Some courses use media or technology developed by a third party who holds the copyright on the use of these materials. It is the responsibility of the instructor to ensure that the use of these materials follows college policies and federal copyright laws, including sections 107 and 110 of the Technology, Education and Copyright Harmonization (TEACH) Act.
Checklist
These steps will help you build a course that meets proficiency in this standard.
When using external materials, link to the direct source whenever possible (i.e. embed or link to a YouTube video rather than downloading and reuploading it to the course).
Include proper attribution for all materials not created by you.
Confirm that none of your course materials are scanned photocopies of other people’s work; use permalinks to available research and readings instead.
Next-Level Recommendations
To advance your course design even more, consider these best practices:
Incorporate the NICC Copyright Infringement Policy into your Course Section Policies in your syllabus.
Utilize Open Educational Resources (OER) whenever possible.
Utilize the NICC Library’s databases for materials cleared for use.
Utilize the TEACH Act checklist for evaluating the use of copyrighted works.
