Measuring: How Long Is It?

1st Graders spent some time comparing the length of objects and discussing whether one thing is longer or shorter than another. Then 1st Graders used tiles, paper clips, and cubes to measure various items in the classroom. 1st Graders identified and measured the longest part, length, of each object. We discussed accurate measuring techniques. These techniques include: starting at the beginning, ending at the end, leaving no gaps or spaces, no overlapping, measuring in a straight line along the edge, and keeping track of the number of units.

Check out some of the different objects we measured in 1G!
