Word Work in Action

On Friday, January 11th, 1st Graders were very excited to host their families and show them some different word work activities. Thank you for spending your morning with us!

Salt/Rice Trays

Show your student the word on an index card and read the word. Use salt in a baking pan or cookie sheet as the writing surface. Ask your student to write the word with his/her finger in the salt/rice and then reread the word.

See, Say, Cover, Write, Check

Write a list of Trick Words in the 1st column. Look and read the first word. Cover the word. Write the word in the 2nd column. Check the word with the word in the 1st column. If the word was spelled correctly, check it off. If the word was spelled incorrectly, re-write the word in the 3rd column.

Shaving Cream

Show your student the word on an index card and read the word. Use shaving cream on a cookie sheet or in a gallon-sized freezer bag. Ask your student to write the word with his/her finger in the shaving cream and then reread the word.

Rainbow Write

Students write each trick word 3 times using a different color for each letter.

Roll a Trick Word

Students write 6 different trick words under each picture of the dice. Students roll a die and write the trick word that corresponds to the number rolled. The 1st word to reach the bottom of the page is the winner! Students can continue rolling to get to 2nd and 3rd place, too!

Build a Word with Magnet Letters

Read or show your student a word on an index card. Ask your student to build the word with the magnet letters and then reread the word. Students can use 'tapping' words from our phonics program.
