Physical Education

The activities in the Physical Education curriculum are geared toward health-related fitness (cardiovascular, body composition, muscular strength, muscular endurance, and flexibility), functional training, and lifetime activities that incorporate various degrees of physical fitness inherent in the curriculum itself. Students may select from the numerous courses listed. All are equally valuable to students, regardless of their vocational or educational goals. Students are encouraged to take more than the required 1.5 graduation requirement to maintain a healthy active lifestyle. An additional .5 credit may be earned toward graduation with a maximum of 2 credits earned in grades 9-12 counting toward graduation.

Personal Wellness (51710)

Open to Grades 9 - 12

Prerequisites: None

Note:  This course can be taken more than once with the Wellness Education Department Chairs' approval.

Students in this class will assess their personal wellness through learning activities that reinforce basic health, related fitness, nutrition, goal setting, and problem-solving.

Activities: Improving personal health through personal wellness journaling, aerobic activities, functional training, and working on individual personal profiles.

Strength & Conditioning (51720)

Prerequisites: None

This course is designed for highly motivated students who want to improve their physical fitness through the medium of strength and cardiovascular training. Personal programs will be designed based on each individual’s fitness assessment and goals. 

Strength Training- This activity introduces basic muscular strength and endurance components with emphasis on improvement, safety, and proper techniques. Core lifts, plyometrics, and various strength activities to improve individual performance and health. 

Cardiovascular Training - Life fitness equipment and various cardiovascular activities to improve the anaerobic and aerobic levels for each individual.

Students will also partake in fitness testing and health-related components related to assessing their personal health and attaining the goal of living a physically active lifestyle into adulthood.

Enhanced Strength & Conditioning (51728)

Open to Grades 10 - 12, 9 with teacher permission

Prerequisites: Personal Wellness OR Strength & Conditioning.

This course is designed for the highly motivated individual who wants to improve their overall fitness through the medium of strength and cardiovascular training. Individual programs will be designed based on their fitness levels and personal goals. This activity will reinforce concepts already introduced and build on these concepts so that individuals can add to their depth of knowledge.

Students will also partake in fitness testing and health-related components related to assessing their personal health and attaining the goal of living a physically active lifestyle into adulthood.

Performance Training (51729)

Open to Grades 10 - 12

Prerequisites: Completion of Personal Wellness or Strength & Conditioning, AND Enhanced Strength & Conditioning.

Training Performance is designed for extremely motivated students who have prior experience with the principles of strength and conditioning, and want to improve overall performance through the medium of strength and cardiovascular training. Individual programs will be designed based on personal goals to take physical performance to the next level. Advanced concepts like plyometrics, training splits, contrast training, and many more will be implemented.

Activities: Students will partake in fitness testing and health-related components related to assessing personal health and attaining the goal of living a physically active lifestyle into adulthood. Concepts discussed in this course will include nutrition, sleep, hydration, flexibility, range of motion, muscular strength, muscular endurance, cardiovascular training, and body composition.

Introduction to Crossfit (51100)

Open to: Grades 10-11-12                                        

Length: 1 Semester

Credits 1/2 credit

Prerequisite:   Personal Wellness, Strength and Conditioning, or Enhanced Strength and Conditioning 


Course Content: Introduction to CrossFit will allow students to explore different fitness trends and training to learn how to correctly and confidently perform each movement with feedback from instructors and the confidence to know that they are doing so safely.


Course Activities: This class will focus on strength training, cardiovascular activity, and different training philosophies and principles that are incorporated to maximize the health benefits utilized under these current fitness trends. Students will focus heavily on correct form and safety of movements to prevent injuries while training.

In this course, students will learn recreational games that they can participate in throughout their lifetime, with an emphasis on lower-impact activities. Sports and games taught in this course include: tennis, volleyball, basketball, badminton, softball, kickball, soccer, and golf. Students will have the opportunity to improve their skills, learn the rules of the game, and strategize, all while working on interpersonal relationships in a cooperative environment. In addition to gameplay activities, students will also partake in strength training, fitness testing, and health-related components related to assessing their personal health and attaining the goal of living a physically active lifestyle into adulthood.

Activities: Tennis, volleyball, pickleball, badminton, golf, disc golf, yard games, Welnet lessons, nutrition, and mindfulness.

Competitive Games offers a variety of competitive and recreational activities, including flag football, floor hockey, and basketball, which involve team play and lifetime activities. Students will learn skills, strategies, and rules of the game while working on interpersonal relationships in a cooperative environment. In addition to the gameplay activities, students will also partake in strength training, fitness testing and health-related components related to assessing their personal health and attaining the goal of living a physically active life into adulthood.

Activities:  Floor hockey, basketball, flag football, soccer, team handball, cardio training, and strength training.

Recreational Sports & Officiating (51060)

Open to Grades 10 - 12

Prerequisites: Successful completion of any course in the Game Play & Strategy category or permission from department chair

Recreational Sports & Officiating is designed to provide students with opportunities to acquire knowledge, skill, and experience to function effectively as a sports official. This course stresses the philosophy of officiating, officiating tips, the code of ethics for officials, dealing with aggressive behavior, and preventative officiating. Other topics covered include personal equipment, pre-game and game duties, post-game duties, rules and regulations, and proper field or floor mechanics. Students completing this course will be prepared to complete the necessary certification tests provided by the WIAA.

Activities: Students will learn the various philosophies of officiating, be provided with officiating tips, learn about the code of ethics for officials, how to deal with aggressive behavior, and preventative officiating.

*Contemporary Issues in Coaching - CAPP (51760)

Open to Grades 11 & 12

Prerequisites: Completion of any course in the Game Play & Strategy category, AND student meets CAPP eligibility requirements as set forth by UW-Oshkosh.

This course will develop and extend a student's understanding of sports and encourage them to consider a range of historical and contemporary issues related to coaching. The issues are selected for their relevance for coaches and are intended to provide contextual material on coaching ranging from early coaching practices to contemporary issues, including children's sports, eating disorders, sexual harassment, and women in sports/Title IX. Topics will include athletics/sports coaching at various levels, emergency procedures, liability, motivation, human relations, public relations, ethics, performance enhancing drugs, and minorities in athletics.

Activities: Students will evaluate contemporary issues in sport and their impact on coaching. Students will gain a critical understanding and evaluation of the profession of coaching.

Recognized Athletic Activity Phys. Ed Replacement Credit

.5 credit (1 season)

Open to Grades 9 - first semester of 12 

Prerequisites: Submit the Physical Education Replacement Credit form for approval prior to the first day of the athletic activity season.

 Students in grades 9-12 are required to take 1.5 credits of physical education, over the course of three (3) school years, to meet State of Wisconsin and Neenah Joint School District graduation requirements.  

Neenah Joint School District provides students in grades 9-12 who have successfully participated in a recognized athletic activity with the option to replace one half credit (0.5 credit) of the physical education graduation requirement with an additional half credit (0.5 credit) in English, social studies, mathematics or science per Wis. Stat. sec. 118.33 (1) (e).  

In order to be eligible for this replacement opportunity, students must successfully complete the following:

-Participate in a recognized athletic activity for an entire season during grades 9 - 11 or first semester of grade 12 which is defined as:

Successful completion of the above criteria will earn students a “pass” grade for one-half credit (0.5 credit) of physical education and will be noted on the student transcript.  Working with their high school counselor, students will select and successfully complete one additional half credit (0.5 credit) in English, social studies, mathematics, or science prior to graduation in order to meet graduation requirements.

Dance - This activity introduces the basic skills and steps of various recreational dances.

Outdoor & Individual Pursuits (51260)

Open to Grades 10 - 12

Prerequisites: None

The emphasis in this course is on skill development and responsibility in the natural setting/outdoor environment with emphasis on personal navigation through unique or novel settings (high elements, wall climbing, snow travel/survival techniques, and water transportation). Students are held accountable for decision-making and group outcomes.

Activities: Orienteering, wall climbing, kayaking, and snowshoeing/winter survival skills.

*Lifeguard Training - CAPP (51400)

.5 credit (1 semester) ; UW-Oshkosh CAPP credits: 2

Open to Grades 10 - 12

Prerequisites: A student must demonstrate strength and stamina by passing a three-part pre-test on day 2 of the semester (details seen below). Students must be 15 years old at the end of course completion for certification. Priority will be given to 16-year-olds as they are eligible for employment.

To pass the the pre-test, students must complete:

1.  A 300-yard swim that continuously demonstrates breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both, but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used. (This is not timed)

2. A timed event performed within 1 minute, 40 seconds. Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed. Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object. Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point, with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface in order to breathe (or to get a breath). Candidates should not swim the distance underwater. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

3. Treading water using only the legs for 2 minutes.

This course is an activity-based certification course that results in an American Red Cross Lifeguard certification, which includes Professional CPR, AED, and First Aid certification valid for two years. Skills will be learned will include rescue for aquatic environments, accident prevention on land and in water, emergency response, and decision-making skills.

Activities: Rescue Skills, CPR Skills, Fitness Assessments, Health Concepts.

Cost: Lifeguard Training textbook, pocket mask, and Red Cross processing fee (approximately $90). These items will be sold to students on the second day of class. A conservative one-piece swimsuit is required for girls, and lined trunk-style swimsuit for boys. University fee if taken for CAPP credit.

*Adventure, Challenge & Cooperative Activities in Phys. Ed. - CAPP (51755)

Students will learn how to complete, participate, and implement outdoor activities as a part of contemporary Physical Education. Activities completed in this course may include hiking, backpacking, inline skating, climbing, skiing, camping, canoeing, snowshoeing, biking, and archery. 

Activities: Students will learn a variety of activities involving cooperative games and challenges, as well as how to facilitate games and activities that go beyond traditional sports skills.

Water Games (51410)

Water Games - This activity includes water polo, water basketball,  volleyball,  underwater hockey,  swimming relays,  and other water games.

Badminton - This activity introduces the basic skills and strategies of this lifetime sport along with rules and methods of scoring.

Cost:   Swimming goggles, and a conservative one-piece swimsuit is required for girls and lined trunk-style swimsuit for boys.

Adventure Education Leadership (51750)

.5 credit (Lifetime Movement category, Summer School ONLY)

Open to Grades 10 - 12

Prerequisites: None

The emphasis in this course is on the process of working through an experience-based program. The teacher is simply the facilitator as students navigate their way through carefully sequenced challenges and activities that allow students to get to know one another, communicate, grow in physical and emotional trust, problem solve and then challenge one another, resulting in confidence and independence critically thinking students.

 Activities: Group problem solving, Belay School, Climbing Wall, High Element Climbing, Kayaking and Fitness Assessments.

Cost: $35.00 Course fee, checks made out to NHS Physical Education. A conservative one-piece swimsuit is required for girls and lined trunk-style swimsuit for boys.

Support Courses

Learning Readiness Physical Education (51715)

.5 credit (1 semester)

Open to Grades 9 - 12

Prerequisites: By permission of department chair only

This course will pair wellness activity with academics, team-taught by a physical education teacher and a classroom teacher. Students will begin their day with a cardio activity using treadmills, cross trainers, and other cardio machines. The class will meet in the standing classroom, cardio room, multipurpose room and outdoors - anywhere but the traditional classroom. 

Activities: Student activities include eye-tracking activities, balance, cross-lateral movements, wall climbing, stress management, dance, racquet activities, basic tumbling, etc.

FITNESS  TECHNOLOGY:  Students will be using pedometers, heart rate monitors, and fitness tools to gain a general knowledge of how and why they need to monitor daily activity. From the knowledge acquired, the students will create a personal profile of their fitness assessments. Students are required to purchase a heart rate monitor strap at registration.
