Academic Excellence Scholarship
The Wisconsin 1989-91 biennial budget included provisions for establishing “Academic Excellence Scholarships.” Under the terms of these scholarships, tuition up to $2,250 per year is to be waived for students attending a University of Wisconsin system college, a vocational, technical and adult education institution, or a Wisconsin independent (private) institution.
The number of Academic Excellence Scholarships is based upon high school enrollment. Four other provisions of the scholarship include:
The scholarships are awarded to seniors who have the highest cumulative grade point average in all subjects based upon grades earned through semester 1 of their senior year.
The scholarships apply only to those students attending a Wisconsin post-secondary institution on a full-time basis by September 30 of the academic year immediately following the school year in which the senior was designated as a scholar.
These undergraduate scholarships are renewable for up to four years at a college or university and up to two years at a technical adult education institution.
In the event of a tie, the faculty of the high school will select the students eligible for the scholarship. (A counselor has been designated as the faculty member responsible for applying the tie-breaking procedures listed below.)
Tie Breaking Procedures
If a tie exists, the scholarship will be awarded to the student with the greatest number of credits earned in advanced level courses through semester one of their senior year.
If a tie still exists, the scholarship will be awarded to the student with the greatest number of total credits earned.
If a tie still exists, the scholarship will be awarded to the student with the highest ACT Composite score. (This criterion will be used only if the tied students have taken the ACT.)
If a tie still exists, the scholarship will be awarded to the student with the highest SAT I combined Verbal and Mathematics scores. (This criterion will be used only if the tied students have taken the SAT I.)
If a tie still exists, the final selection of the scholarship winner will be made by a vote of the Local Scholarship Selection Committee.
Eligibility for Consideration
An in-district student must be classified as a senior based on credits earned and courses scheduled for the senior year.
An out-of-district student must have begun his or her senior year at Neenah High School.
TECHNICAL EXCELLENCE SCHOLARSHIP
Beginning in 2015, Technical Excellence Scholarships (TES) are to be awarded to Wisconsin high school seniors who have the highest demonstrated level of proficiency in technical education subjects. The number of scholarships each high school is eligible for is based on total student enrollment.
The scholarships are only for use at a Wisconsin Technical College within the Wisconsin Technical College System (WTCS) located within the state. The value of the scholarship is up to $2,250 per year, to be applied towards tuition.
Provisions of the scholarship include:
the scholarship does not exceed six semesters, of a total of three years.
the student must be enrolled on a full-time basis by September 30 of the academic year following the academic year in which he/she was designated as a scholar, at a participating Wisconsin Technical College.
no student may receive both the TES scholarship and an Academic Excellence Scholarship (AES).
nominees are to be selected by the application process and committee selection based on the eligibility criteria selected below.
Eligibility criteria include
the student must exhibit interest in and planning for a technical career
the student must have completed one of the eight following eligibility items:
Be a CTE concentrator, which is a student who has completed at least three high school CTE courses in a program area. A student may be enrolled in the third course at the time of their nomination.
Be participating in a Youth Apprenticeship program under the supervision of the Wisconsin Dept. of Workforce Development.
Has participated in a Technical High School Diploma program as certified by Wisconsin Dept. of Public Instruction.
Has participated in a Career and Technical Training pathway as defined by the Wisconsin Dept. of Public Instruction.

Has completed a technical training program for high school students if the program is offered by a UW System school, a Wisconsin Technical College System school, a tribal college in Wisconsin, or a private nonprofit college or university located in Wisconsin.
An in-district student must be classified as a senior based on credits earned and courses scheduled for the senior year.
An out-of-district student must have begun his or her senior year at Neenah High School.
Tie Breaking Procedures
When students emerge from the point system with tied scores, CTE grades become a tie-breaker. Because some students may have the same credit hours at the same time of nomination, the Higher Educational Aids Board (HEAB)-recommended ranking system then assigns a ranking to "tied" students based on the grade point earned by eligible students in CTE courses. The grades used for this purpose are only those grades earned in CTE courses, not a student's overall grade point. If a tie still exists, the scholarship will be awarded to the student with the greatest number of total credits earned.
Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) and the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT)
The PSAT/NMSQT is administered to interested sophomores and juniors in early October on the NHS campus. Students must pre-register with the counseling office.
Why should I take the PSAT/NMSQT?
To find out what the SAT is like.
To predict SAT and ACT scores from your PSAT score.
To compare scores to applicants from hundreds of colleges.
To estimate the chance of getting into or succeeding at the college of your choice.
To enter the competition for the scholarships awarded through the National Merit Scholarship program.
(Students interested in competing for National Merit Scholarships must take the PSAT/NMSQT as a junior).
