MISSION STATEMENT: The Business Department's primary mission is to prepare students for business occupations. Business education focuses on ever-changing aspects of business and information technology that affect every member of society, as well as preparing individuals with the appropriate work skills needed to be employable and assist the local business community.

Additional Information:

▪ Successful completion of requirements in *Laude level classes can lead to college credit either by College Level Examination Program (CLEP) or Fox Valley TechnicalCollege Dual/Transcripted Credit which may be accepted by 4-year colleges. 

▪ Placement of graduates from Fox Valley Technical College's Business programs average over 90% after 6 months, with an average annual income of $61,980 after 5 years and $48,052 six months after graduation (As of 2021. See FVTC's Business Program page for current info.)

Foundations of Business & Marketing (20100)

This course is designed to introduce students to the world of business. Students will learn business concepts and skills about the following: What are Business, Entrepreneurship, Management, Marketing, Human Resources, Business Finance, the NHS Business Academy process and careers. A mini-business simulation also takes place where students are the managers of their own business and the classroom is turned into a business community. Junior Achievement will also be integrated through the Titan Business Challenge simulation using a volunteer from our business community. Students will learn the importance of business through the incorporation of 21st  Century Skills and the relevancy of how business plays into their world.

Intro to Business & IT Careers (20050)

Prerequisites: None

In this one-semester course students will spend time researching the Career Clusters of Business Management & Administration,  Business Finance, and Information Technology. Each student will have a chance to explore all fourteen pathways within these clusters. Upon completion of the course, students will have the knowledge to make an educated decision on what pathway and plan of study they will continue to explore. The course will be based on the cluster's knowledge and skills statements.

Computer Applications - Online (20450)

Prerequisites: None

Required for any Business, Management, and Administration pathway, and recommended for any Information Technology pathway within the NHS Business & Information Technology Academy. 

Computer Applications is an online, self-paced course focusing on the basics of MS Office. Students who enroll in this course will learn essential skills for success beyond high school in relation to the following application software types: word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and database.

Course Activities: Students will end the semester with a culminating project demonstrating their new knowledge of the MS Office Suite.

Marketing (21350)

Prerequisites: None, Foundations of Business and Marketing highly recommended         

Required for all career pathways within the NHS Business and Information Technology Academy.

The first nine weeks of this course are spent examining the role of the 5P's (Product, Place, Price, Promotion, and People) of the Marketing Mix play in the world of Marketing. The second nine weeks will be spent applying our new knowledge to the marketing areas of Sports, Entertainment, & Travel and Hospitality through the eyes of a Marketing Consultant. Course components include a trend overview in the various industries, including the latest in social media marketing.

Course Activities: Classroom instruction will include individual,  small, and large group instruction;  guest speakers; and many hands-on activities. Students who are involved in marketing have the opportunity to participate in realistic and professional activities as a part of the student organization DECA. Activities include school functions, field trips, guest speakers, competitions and scholarship opportunities.

NOTE:  This course covers the same content as Personal Financial Literacy and satisfies the Personal Financial Literacy requirement, but does NOT count as a Social Studies elective.

This course provides comprehensive coverage of financial concepts valuable in today’s business world. Students will become financially literate and learn options forfeiture investing. Stocks, bonds, mutual funds, banking and credit union operations, alternative investment options, financial planning, insurance, credit, and retirement planning will be covered in this course.

Course Activities: Computerized stock market activities, stock market investment competition, Internet activities, guest speakers, financial calculators, and skills utilizing the 21st Century Skills of collaboration, research, communication, information technology, critical thinking, global concepts, and life and career skills.

Competing in a global economy requires an understanding of the basic principles of international business.  Global trade, imports and exports, currency exchange, international organizations and agreements, and international business careers are examined. Cultural awareness topics include international business etiquette, stereotypes, gestures and nonverbal communication, gift-giving, the role of women, table manners, and customs. This course provides students with insights into being successful employers/employees in a global marketplace.

This course provides students with opportunities to investigate, understand and apply the process of choosing entrepreneurship as a career path. Students will explore the entrepreneurial experience by focusing on an awareness of entrepreneurship, opportunity recognition, business concept development, and preliminary feasibility testing. Students gain the knowledge, skills, concepts, and strategies relevant for start-up and early-stage entrepreneurs. The practical hands-on approach encourages students to immerse themselves in the entrepreneurial experience.

Course Content:  Accounting plays a vital role in the day-to-day activities of every business. In this course, students will learn what opportunities are available in the business world for accountants and how to prepare financial reports manually and electronically through accounting software. Students will also learn how to interpret reports and how to make business decisions based on financial information.

Course Activities: Individualized and group instruction, guest speakers, use of small business accounting software including multimedia tutorials, spreadsheet applications, online vocabulary games and quizzes, workbook assignments, and a business simulation.

This course is designed to get students excited about becoming true entrepreneurs by giving them the opportunity to create and fully develop their own product(s) or service. Real-world entrepreneurs and business experts serve as coaches and mentors guiding student teams through the process of ideation, market research, and business plan development. 

Over the course of the year, student teams learn about marketing, accounting, as well as the legal aspects of starting a business. They have access to a network of professionals to further develop their skills (teamwork, problem-solving, presentation, communication) for college and career readiness. Pitch Week helps to further fire the entrepreneurial spirit by putting student teams in front of actual investors so they can pitch their innovative idea to win funding and turn their wishful thinking into a reality.

Prerequisites: Marketing and at least one additional business class

Advanced Topics in Business and Marketing is dedicated to applying and using the functions of management, marketing information management, market planning, product/service management, selling, human resources management, operations, and financial analysis.  Students develop essential 21st Century skills, including critical thinking and problem solving, collaboration and teamwork, communication, creativity and innovation.

Course Activities: Activities include operation of the school store, individual and group instruction, individual and group projects, guest speakers, competitions, optional participation in DECA activities, and collaborative opportunities with other groups and organizations within the Neenah High School community.

NOTE: This course is approved for Dual/Transcripted credit at Fox Valley Technical College. All dual credit courses are subject to annual approval.

This course is designed as a second-year program for teams that have completed INCubatorEDU, have received funding, and are ready to begin launching a business. The goal is to guide students to a successful launch of their company and gain traction in the marketplace. Content is built from real-life entrepreneurial practices and real-world business accelerator practices. New business ventures share many themes even though they vary widely with the specifics of the product or service they provide. Content will be delivered in a blended learning environment to meet the different needs of student teams. 

Course Activities: Students will be operating their funded businesses.

Youth Apprenticeship (09985)

.5 credit per semester, up to 4 semesters (2 years). Students must work 450 hours for a 1-year program, or 900 hours for a 2-year program.

Open to Grades 11 & 12

Prerequisites: Good attendance record, on track for graduation, good communication and time management skills.

NOTE: Students that do not meet program employment requirement will be transferred to the 9990/9991 Work-Based Learning course.

NOTE: Students should check with their prospective post-secondary schools as to receiving for "Credit for Prior Learning"

Wisconsin's Youth Apprenticeship program is a part of a statewide School-to-Work initiative. It is designed for high school students who want hands-on learning in an occupational area at a worksite along with classroom instruction.

This one or two-year elective program combines academic and career and technical instruction with mentored on-the-job learning. Students work 10 to 20 hours per week / 450 hours for 1 year or 900 hours for a 2 year program. Employers provide wages, worker's compensation, competency training, and mentoring.

Upon successful completion of the program, the Department of Workforce Development issues a Certificate of Occupational Proficiency. 

All post-secondary options are still open to students: four-year university, two-year technical college, apprenticeship, other industry training programs, military, and/or employment.

This program will provide individualized basic computer skills. Get ready for the workforce and the rest of high school by learning the skills necessary to be successful. The course will include a keyboard review, creation and basic formatting of documents,  spreadsheets, email and Web 2.0 tools.
