Health

Required at the state level for graduation, Health Education emphasizes a variety of health-related topics. This course should be taken when students and their families believe that they are mature enough to benefit most from the content. A student may be exempt from the family life education section by a written request from the pupil’s parent/ guardian.  An alternative unit of instruction will be required.

Personal Health (34000)

Open to Grades 9 - 12

Prerequisites: None

This course covers six units of study related to personal health:

Mental Health- Students today are faced with great challenges with less opportunity to learn and practice stress reduction and coping skills. The mental health unit takes a look at life expectancy today and how it relates to personal health choices. Students learn about the effects of stress on health, participate in positive stress reduction techniques, and learn about depression and suicide. A variety of mental illnesses are discussed, as students learn how to identify different mental illnesses and how they are treated.

Nutrition- Students will explore different body types and how these body types relate to weight management. A food diary will be kept so that students can evaluate their current eating habits and make healthy adjustments.

Life Cycle- The life cycle, from conception to death, is discussed in this unit. Students learn about reproductive health care, and how puberty changes the body in order to facilitate reproduction. Fetal development and delivery are taught, as well as important topics surrounding death and dying.

Relationships- This unit explores gender differences and relationships.  Guest speakers during this unit include guests from the Christine Anne Center for domestic abuse, REACH Counseling Services to discuss sexual abuse and internet safety, and the Neenah Police Department to teach basic self-defense skills. In addition, this unit of instruction includes information on the importance of sexual abstinence and common methods of contraception.

Disease- Students learn how to analyze health-related information for validity in this unit, as they research and prepare a presentation on specific diseases common to today’s society. They will learn how the body's immune system works in preventing and fighting disease, and also basic medication information. Sexually Transmitted Infections and HPV/HIV/AIDS will be covered in this unit as well. The connection between health and the environment will be discussed, and students will gain a better understanding of the health care system.

Drugs and Alcohol- In this unit students will learn about how drug and alcohol abuse affects society, families,  lifestyles, and individuals.  Guests from the Neenah Police Department and from the Department of Corrections aid in instructing individuals about the laws related to drugs and alcohol, and how abuse/misuse can lead to legal consequences. Students explore the physical effects of drug abuse and learn how to seek help for drug-related problems.
