Respondus LockDown Browser

Respondus LockDown Browser (LDB) is an academic integrity tool that your instructor may require you to use in order to complete a Moodle quiz or exam.  This browser creates an added level of security by limiting your ability to print, access the internet, and use other programs until the quiz is submitted. The use of LDB requires students to download this application to their personal computers or have access to a campus computer lab. If you have security concerns about using this application, you can find more information about Respondus in the Privacy Statement.

This page covers guides and how-to's for navigating the use of a LockDown Browser. You can use the link navigation to the left to quickly jump to a specific section. Use the bar at the top of this page to go to a different page topic.

LockDown Browser Basics

Preparing for a LockDown Browser Quiz/Test

You should prepare for your LockDown Browser exam at least 24 hours prior to your exam time; This allows you to troubleshoot possible problems in advance.

Firstly, navigate to your Exam. Not that clicking Launch LockDown Browser will do nothing if you do not have the application installed (see Figure 1).

Pressing Download LockDown Browser will open the Respondus Download Webpage (see Figure 2). Download the installer, open, and then run the installation.

Upon finishing installation, you can check your LDB Setup by pressing the respective link on your Quiz page (see Figure 1).

Accessing a Quiz/Test with LockDown Browser

Prior to your exam, you should restart your device, which will ensure you are running minimal programs and can connect to the building network properly. You should also check that you have the latest version of LockDown Browser installed.

Once you have LDB installed, you can access your exam directly through Moodle in any standard browser; You cannot access the quiz by opening LDB first.

Navigate to the specific Course Page, and locate the exam you will be taking. Open the exam, and you should have an option to Launch LockDown Browser (see Figure 3).

A pop-up will then appear. Click Open Link. Your LDB will then open, but if any conflicting programs or applications are running, you will get another pop-up asking for permission to close them.

Once LDB has fully opened, you can click Start Quiz to begin your exam.

Note: If the use of a Respondus Monitor has also been required by the instructor, it will bring up a new window before entering the assessment. This will guide you through a number of setup procedures to verify your identity and check the testing environment.

Submitting a Quiz/Test with LockDown Browser

After completing your exam through the LockDown Browser, select Submit All and Finish on the review screen.

Once finished with the review screen, you will be redirected to the main Quiz activity screen. Click Exit Browser, or close your LDB to exit the program.

Note: Due to LockDown Browser's restrictions, we cannot include an image or video for reference. However, these pages and features look exactly as they do in a normal browser. Please refer to the Moodle Assignments & Quizzes section of this site for more information and visuals.

Troubleshooting Tips: Exit Procedure

There is always the possibility of technical issues while using LockDown Browser while taking a quiz/test. The cause of in-quiz issues can be related to a number of factors, including the device itself, internet connectivity, and/or unknown Moodle system errors.

It is important to not panic if you experience and issue during an online exam. As long as the test is still open and you have not run out of timer, you will be able to exit and re-enter the exam where you left off. Moodle's quiz activity saves your responses through the last screen that you completed in the activity.

If there are issues while using LDB, close the browser, input your reason for closing before the quiz is completed, and relaunch your LDB. In a situation where you cannot close the browser, you may need to restart your desktop.

To understand more about pre and post-quiz technical support, you can access the LockDown Browser & Monitor Technical Support Options here for more information.
