Waiting Room(s)

Waiting Room

Your instructor may use Zoom’s Waiting Room feature to manage when students can enter the meeting.

If you join a Zoom session early, you might see a message saying: “Waiting for the host to start the meeting." This means the host hasn’t yet opened the room (see Figure 1).

Once the host starts the meeting or admits participants individually, you'll be let in. You may also see a message stating "Host has joined. we've let them know you're here." (see Figure 1a).

This feature helps keep class sessions secure and gives instructors time to prepare before everyone joins.

Breakout Room

During a Zoom class, your instructor might use Breakout Rooms to split the group into smaller sessions for discussions, group work, or other activities.

When it's time to join a breakout room, you’ll see a pop-up window inviting you to enter; Click Join to be sent to your assigned group (see Figure 2). While in a breakout room, you can talk and collaborate just like in the main Zoom session.

When time is almost up, you’ll get a countdown message letting you know the breakout room is closing soon and you’ll be returned to the main meeting. You can wait for the timer to end to be redirected automatically, or click Leave Breakout Room to leave early (see Figure 2a).

If you ever need help while in a breakout room, use the Ask for Help button to alert the host.
