A phrase is a word, or a small group of words, that function as a single grammatical/semantic unit.
We distinguish five types of phrase which take their names from their central element, or head word.
A noun phrase consists of noun or pronoun head-word, and any determiners and modifiers.
A verb phrase is composed of a verb head word, which may be preceded by any auxiliaries with or without a negator such as no or not.
A prepositional phrase consists of a preposition, a noun or pronoun that serves as its complement, and any modifiers.
An adjective phrase has an adjective as the head word, and may include an adverb or adverb phrase as the pre-head string.
An adverb phrase has an adverb as the head word, with modifiers before, ager, or both.
