The date of the Miao new year varies from place to place, but most of Miao new year festivals happen after harvesting, that is, the 卯 day or the 丑day of the lunar calendar on September, October, or November.
In the first few days before the Miao new year, every household has to clean the house and prepare the New Year's products such as: glutinous rice cake, rice wine, tofu, bean sprouts. People usually would kill pigs or buy pork for the n ew year feast.
Wealthy people also need to make sausages and blood tofu (also known as pig blood curd), and they would make new clothes for their families.
On the evening before the first day of the Miao Year, the whole family would eat New Year's dinner together at home.
They would wait till 12 o'clock and open the door to set off firecrackers to welcome the new year.
On the morning of the first day of the Miao new year, the elders would lead the family to worship their ancestors at home. After breakfast, young and middle-aged men would go to their neighbors' home and greet them.
In the first two days of the Miao new year, there are certain taboos in the family, such as: they cannot go out to carry water, they cannot cut firewood or cut grass, they cannot sweep the ground. In addition, women cannot do needlework. In some areas, instead of women cooking, only men can cook.
Male and female marriages often happen during the new year time.
During this period, young men and women would sing and dance. They would talk with each other and express their love.
The new year celebration usually take about 9 days.

The April eighth 四月八
This festival happens every eighth day of April in the lunar calendar
It is said that in ancient times, there was a wise and brave Miao leader named Yayi 亚宜. He led the Miao people to fight against the cruel rulers. After several successful rebel in Hunan, Sichuan, and Guizhou, Yayi was killed unfortunately near a fountain in Guiyang on April 8. In order to commemorate this Miao hero and honor his achievements, Miao people will hold a series of performances near the fountains every year on this day
Those performances include climbing the knife ladder, walking in the fire, lion dance, playing drums and singing competition.

Lu sheng Festival
Lu Sheng Festival is the most popular and grand traditional festival in the Miao area.
The Lusheng is a Miao musical instrument with multiple bamboo pipes, each fitted with a free reed, which are fitted into a long blowing tube made of hardwood. It most often has five or six pipes of different pitches, and is thus a polyphonic instrument
The festival is about the worship to the ancestors and the celebration of the harvest.
Generally, a ceremony is held before the festival. First, esteemed seniors in a village would preside over ancestor worship.
After that, young men and women would all take their Lusheng to the Lusheng site, where they would form a circle. They would do the Lusheng dance and blow the Lusheng.
There will also be activities like horse racing and bullfight during the festival.
