Population: According to the 2010 China census, the total population of the Miao people in China was 9426007. This number makes them the fourth largest Chinese ethnic minority group. The population of Miao people around the world has a population of 13 million.
Distribution: Miao people live all over the world, mainly in China's provinces such as Guizhou, Hunan, Hubei, Sichuan, Yunnan, Gui, and Qiong, as well as in Southeast Asia countries like Laos, Vietnam, Thailand.
In US, by the end of the 20th century, there were more than 200,000 Hmong people (a sub-group of the Miao people) migrating to the United States. Most of them came from Laos, Vietnam and Thailand. The Hmong people living in the United States are mainly concentrated in Fresno, California.
Origination: From the traditional songs of Miao people, historians are able to date back the origination of Miao people to the age of Yan and Huang legends (about five or six thousand years ago) .
Miao people had a long primitive society, and there was a transition from matriarchy to patriarchy and from blood marriage to dual marriage.
According to historical documents and Miao's myth, the ancestors of the Miao people were Chiyou 蚩尤.
