DP1 - Essay Examples and Shared Grading
You need to have a clear link to Economic theory in your topic. There is an expectation that you will explain and generally demonstrate a solid knowledge of that theory.
Graphs and charts are not needed, according to the assessment criteria, but... they are typically useful tools and most essays that score C or higher have them.
Econ teachers' guidance usually discourages students from choosing a topic from Macroeconomics, as it's difficult to "narrow" that down to the level expected for an EE.
There has been one MDID student who did a Macro essay, essentially, and that student scored a C. This was basically the "ceiling" for that essay (it was unlikely to get higher, even with improvements to reasoning, argument, etc.
This means that most Econ EE's will be on a Microeconomics topic, which you should have almost finished studying by the time that EE subject/topic selection comes up in DP1.
Past students have frequently run into trouble getting access to the information they need. Econ essays typically require DATA, and that data can be hard to come by. This has been the #1 source of frustration and the main reason why Econ EE topics are forced to change, often very late in the process.
This means that A LOT of research and legwork is necessary early in the EE process to determine whether your essay topic is viable. If you're shooting for a C, it might not be the biggest issue (we've had a very short Econ EE with limited data get a respectable C), but if you are aiming an A or B you need that freakin' data. Have a backup plan -- this means a potential backup topic as well as a backup subject, in case the Econ side of things doesn't work out.
(As a non-Econ teacher, I just wanted to put this here. It's my website, I can do what I want! Nyuk nyuk nyuk nyuk nyuk! Can't touch this!)
For the class of 2023, it is very likely that we will need to place restrictions on the number of Econ EE's (we have one Econ teacher and there is a maximum number of students that each teacher can supervise.)
While this is not 100% certain yet, expect the following...
If limitations are necessary...
It will not be a one-person decision (multiple adults will be involved)
Your EE topic proposal will play a role in the decision
Your class performance (as a predictor of engagement and success) will play a role in the decision
