DP2 - Interim Reflection Session
Course candidates are still able to submit their Extended Essay to IB if they so choose. Course candidates who opt to do the full EE need to follow all of the same expectations as Diploma candidates. Students who do not wish to submit their EE to IB for marking will still submit some form of EE, though in an adapted form. The expectations for length will be shorter and have an expected minimum number of words as well. Due to the change in candidacy, there can be a little more flexibility when it comes to following the exact rules and expectations for the subjects. This enables course candidates, and students who are not any form of candidate, to get the benefit of experiencing a long-term research and writing project before they go to university, while also honoring their interest in a subject or topic that intrigues them.
How do I become a Course Candidate?
At the beginning of the DP2 school year, some diploma candidates are allowed to switch their candidacy towards a Course Candidate. Once this occurs and a student wishes to continue with the DP Core, there are no required changes for them in the previously laid out final process. However, if the candidate wishes to drop the Core, then there will be subsequent changes towards their final output of the extended essay.
The goal of this process is twofold: in order to ensure that MDID Course candidates are able to produce an acceptable piece of independent work within this new time frame, and ensure that supervisors are able to give those students enough time to properly reflect on what needs to be completed.
A Course Candidate’s final work will need to be delivered after the IB’s usual Core deadlines. The new schedule is as follows:
After a student officially changes their candidacy, a student will not be required to complete their interim reflection with their supervisor at the beginning of the DP2 school year. The new deadline for that interim reflection will be by the end of the calendar year - essentially, when diploma candidates are getting their viva voce meetings and reflections done, course candidates will be required to schedule their interim meeting, complete it, and write a 100-150 word second reflection to Managebac.
On a monthly basis, students will have to deliver to Managebac a minimum of 500 words per month, starting in October. Supervisors and candidates are recommended to have informal meetings about this new work, and the time allotted for them will count towards the student’s five-hour “hours spent” time.
By the end of the first semester of DP2, students will be required to submit a minimum 2000 words and a maximum of 2500 words work to Managebac. This work all-together will be counted as a “first draft” - and as such, will be the main component of the course candidates’ pass/fail score for the MDID EE class.
The expectation of the first draft, in terms of its intellectual rigor, proper presentation, and required sections, shall be the same as the Diploma Candidate EE. The main difference is the lower word count maximum (as the EE itself does not have a minimum word count - although we do not recommend submitting an empty page for an EE.)
Supervisors are given time during the winter break to provide comments and feedback on their first drafts. The one round of official feedback on that draft should occur within one week of the start of the new school semester.
The final draft and viva voce will occur in the window between our Mock exams and the IB External exams. This window is slightly consolidated compared to diploma candidates. Students will be required after the viva voce to complete their final reflection.
