Class overview
DP Global Politics is not a course about the day to day political developments of a country, or even the world as a whole, but rather the complex set of perspectives, attitudes, and relationships that shape t he world we live in today and the future our children and grandchildren will inherit. As our subject guide says, Global Politics “enables students to critically engage with different and new perspectives and approaches to politics in order to comprehend the challenges of the changing world and become aware of their role in it as active global citizens.” It is, at its heart, a course about big concepts rather than specific people and places. Through our case studies, debates, class discussions, and especially through students’ work in the Engagement Activity (the IA for the course) I expect that students will meaningfully reflect on their own understanding of their world, their hopes for the future, and the crucial role that all of us can play, even as individuals, in shaping the communities and countries we live in. To me, there is no other course that captures the IB mission to cultivate “inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world” better than Global Politics.
