DP1 Students: IA Engagements!
These are the heart or the core of the Global Politics IA. Good engagements are the foundation of a strong IA score.
Basically, you are expected to learn by direct communication and interaction with political actors, or people who have a stake in an issue.
Your research should help you identify worthwhile people and organizations (NGOs, non-profits, charities, etc.) that you can communicate with to further your understanding of the issue. We will sometimes need to do some "digging" to find contact information for these groups and individuals, but it can be done.
Frankly, the best times to talk to most people will be between 9 AM and 5 PM, or during their working day. There are exceptions to this. The challenge of that is that YOU are in SCHOOL during this time.
GloPo class times on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays (as well as any self-study periods you may have) are the best times to conduct your interviews. I will happily help arrange a quiet place for you to use during Glopo time if you are able to set up an interview. If you have to set it up for a different class period, we will need to apply for official leave (which can be done -- don't worry.)
It can be a bit nerve-wracking to communicate with adults, especially people who are involved in politics in some way. Keep in mind that these interviews are opportunities for THEM to share their work and their interest with a younger audience -- we have NEVER had a bad interview where a person was obviously disinterested in speaking to a student. The #1 takeaway that most students have had after their interviews was something similar to "that was a lot less difficult than I thought it would be."
YOU need to be ready. This means, you walk into the interview and you know what you're going to ask about. You've done your "homework" on the political issue, the organization / person, and you have a pretty clear idea of what you hope to learn from the engagement. Being ready before you even reach out to someone is a great asset -- you will come across as more confident and prepared if you actually are well-prepared 😇
Time matters for these interviews in a number of ways. First, our own time is limited. We need to finish our IA draft by the end of April. Second, interviewees' time should be respected; we do not need hours of their time, and we typically ask for 20-30 minutes (they usually enjoy themselves and most interviews end up reaching 45 minutes to an hour in length.)
I need to be able to verify that you have carried out the engagements. That means some kind of photographic or video evidence, in most cases (screenshots of a Zoom interview, or I need to see that a recording exists.)
You need to get the person's permission to record ANYTHING; video or audio. If they say no, you need to take notes very well while the interview is happening.
As interviews get set up, I will talk to you about how I will verify that they are happening. This is something that I must do for the IB people in order for them to accept each IA report.
Well, you're likely to either use a phone call or email. Below are tips for putting both together.
NOTE: If your MDID Google Account picture is some anime character... change it for the duration of our IA, please. You will risk not being taken seriously.
